Ah yes.... the leaves are falling, the boost is climbing, the temps are dropping, and the FWD/RWD (IWD) cars are losing traction..... its definately winter mods thread time again.

This time around it would be nice if everyone would participate. The reason I say this is because there are several cars that we haven't seen out and about for some time and updates are in order.

I am entertaining the idea of cams, coil overs, and a new wheel/tire combo. I am 50/50 on the cams. There haven't been enough before/after dyno runs to prove they are worth the cost. The suspension is a done deal but I don't want to install coil overs until the snow is gone. As for the wheels, I believe I'm going to go with some 18X8 rims with a 245/40/18 tire probably Nitto NT01. The wheel purchase wont be made till April so the tires will be nice and fresh for summer.

1. make the car run again. (replace piston)
2. maybe install phantom grip while motor is out anyways
3. do a little porting while motor is out

Way too much to list. The car will basiclly be completely stripped, every thing will be cleaned. Full delrin bushing set will be installed. Any componet not in excellent condition will be replaced. I would like to get all body repair finished and painted by spring. If I can get the roller fully prepped and ready for the engine to be dropped in by spring I will be happy. Might have it up and running by fall, but I am shooting for spring of 09 for it to be complete. It should be better than a new car when I am complete. After all that work I will not be afraid to drive the car, it will be seeing a lot of track time.

I would wait to get the motor and drive train in the car first in case there is anything you have to cut or mod, pull everything out and than go onto paint.

I would wait to get the motor and drive train in the car first in case there is anything you have to cut or mod, pull everything out and than go onto paint.

The only part of the body that might need modification is the trans tunnel for header clearance. It would be ideal to mock up the engine before paint, it would add more time to the build. I need the front end straighted out before I can mock up the engine, so that is top on the list. I figured since that was getting done might as well as take care of the other body issues. I can always pull the engine and touch up the engine bay instead of having to do the whole thing. Engine bay will have to be stripped for repairs so it would be easy to paint with nothing in it.

i say paint it now with nothing in it... but maybe paint the body once the motor is in... just in case something happens in the meanwhile.

VPT... why is the Phantom Grip a bad idea? there are similar products on the market available as well. all the same though huh? i cannot afford a quaiffe right now.

But when its painted you are going to scratch it up alot droping in a motor not ment for the car and trying to fit things.

Phantom Grip - bad news.

Just ask Big Erv of Big Erv Motorsports and Hoist Retrieval Services. He makes a knock off of the phantom grip. Hell he'd probably just give you one.

I plan on getting some f ing traction

1.TCS system

2. SLICKS!!!!!! or drag radials for next season.

3. upgrade from the 38 lb min to a 44 lb min compressor wheel, clipped turbine wheel. TiAl, new seals and bearings on turbo just to be safe.

4. port turbo and exhaust mani/ceramic coated

5. Add a second resonator to the exhaust

Also getting my current clutch swapped out for one that is not going to slip after doing a single burn out.

Hrm..

Well, the Volvo needs the turbo rebuilt, (seals are going out) so i might just Take my other engine for it and do new rods and pistons, some 38mm valves, a Cossie exhaust housing, and actually install my 3" exhaust, along with some browntop injectors. Then, I might just swap over to a T5 from a V8 camaro/firebird (better gearing and shifter placement), and get an LSD in the rear, and put on some new shocks and springs.

The Green Daily Beater Escort GT needs a little exhaust work, and I need to check how much hidden rustworm there is.

the Black Wagon of Doom needs bits of work all over. exhaust, suspension, turbo/intercooler/downpipe, and a freshening of the engine.

The AE86 needs rear wheel and carrier bearings, probably a rebuilt diff, or maybe a kaaz, or even something beefier. and the engine needs to be repaired or replaced, most likely with the turbo'd 7-rib 4age, but I'd really like to find a 20V head and some high-comp pistons, and do it up right, with ITB's. Needs a bit of bodywork too, mostly just painting, with a spot or three of rust removal, and some proper fender arches to fit the 225/50 Hoosiers underneath..

I want to repack the bearings on my trailer too.

Sarge.... that is alot of work. I think you should populate the forsale section and get your fleet down to a reliable race car and daily driver.

Yes, it's a lot of work.

BUT:

1) It's a fun hobby; I enjoy working on cars. Although sometimes the process can be frustrating, in the end it's enjoyable when the results are in and the fruits of my labors are ripe.

2) All of my cars are 100% paid for. No car payments, and less expensive insurance than if the car was under lien through a bank (currently, I've got four cars licensed and insured, and the insurance ends up being less than 100 bucks a month for everything. With my driving record, I think that would triple if I got a new car and was forced to get full coverage).

3) Reliable? Abso-friggin-lutely!!! How do you think your EVO will handle being piss-pounded as hard as I treat my cars, say 10 years down the road, with over 150k miles on it?. (Although the Volvo and the AE86 are 22 years old, and the Escorts from 13 to 15). Personally, I don't think that newer cars can do that.

Note, my cars aren't actually broken, with the exception of the engine of the AE86. That was a used engine, not the original, that the Previous Owner installed after overheating the original. I think he said that it had somewhere in the vicinity of ~200k miles on it.

All the other things on my list are either my own modifications, or routine maintenance. So I do have a reliable daily driver (green EGT), that gets between 26 and 32mpg, that doubles as an autoX/track car when needed.

And NO, I will not sell the AE86, unless I get Twenty Thousand U.S. Dollars. That car is just WAY the hell too much fun on track to get rid of. The one time I had it at BlackHawk Farms, I was sincerely shocked and impressed how well it handled around that track.

If I WERE to get a newer car (which I've been thinking about sometimes) I'm of two minds: Either get something super-uiltra-cheap-econo, that has no chance in HELL of being modded. Like, say, an old-school Subaru Brat. Oops, that won't work, I'd want to put an STI drivetrain in it. Maybe a Geo Metro or a Hyundai or Kia, something along those lines.

OR, something that will still put a shit-eating-grin on my face when I drive it. I'd want to go RWD or AWD. I thought strongly of an SRT4 after driving Joe Thornton's, but it's FWD. Same thing with a mazdaspeed3. I've driven a couple EVO's, and a couple Imprezas, and a Legacy, and I'd have to go with an EVO first, simply because of how well the cars ergonomics fit me. Then it would be a Legacy, then an STI would be at the bottom. Now, in the RWD/CWD class, which would be awesome, it just depends on what happens with the Dodge Challenger, and if they make it close to how they had it at the Chicago Auto Show a couple years ago. if it turns out to be a huge pig, like the challenger-wannabe, then that'll be a no-go. But, if it's actually going to be a performance car, I'd get one. The new mustangs are kind of pigs too, although they do handle pretty good when set up well. solstices are too bubbly-looking, although the Sky looks nice, even if it does have some ugly cadillac-angularity about it.
A used FRC 'vette would be fun, but the insurance on a corvette would suck. An Exige would be sweet, no doubt about that. Or, mabye a FactoryFive kit car. Or, maybe a DeLorean. They'll be available in Q1 2008, for only 57k!

Anyway, that's enough phalangic diarrhea for now, especially in the winter mods thread....

^^ Bla bla bla..... cars weren't ment to be parked for half the year either. They depreciate every day so you might as well use them.

Back on topic.....

I don't think I will be doing cams. The following was posted by GSC, one of the top producers of cams for the EVO platform:

The evo 9 stock cams are defiantly the best mitsu has offered out of all the 4G63T cams, they are defiantly tricky to make better. I’ll bet the new mivec 9 cams don't show much if any improvement over stock.

Here is a before and after HKS 272 cam dyno of an EVO9 with intake and exhaust. It does show gains but they aren't worth the trouble.

http://img398.imageshack.us/img398/9808/hkscamshb1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

It appears gains are very minimal on a stock turbo'd EVO9. It makes more sense to add alcohol injection and crank up the boost than it does to install $600 worth of cams and only get a slight midrange improvement. People with bigger turbos are seeing 25whp gains but it appears the stock turbo runs out of breath up top and the stock cams + mivec provide enough air flow to max it out.

This is good news to me because I wanted to try and not crack open the engine on this car. Its also nice to know that Mitsu evolved the 4G63/16G combo to something great right out of the box.

I'm fairly happy with the performance less the shorter 4th gear but that will be corrected when the stock clutch runs out of breath.

So I'm back to suspension and wheels as my winter mods. I've also been testing A TON of ECU hacks. I enjoy tuning more than I enjoy wrenching.

Being a mazda guy myself, I would love to see a 323GTX fully built!! I've been thinking about getting into RWD and RX-7 LS1 or RX-3 has been taunting me. I also still have thoughts of getting a late model Camaro SS too.
Mazdaspeed Winter Mods:
-Custom air intake
-AWR baffled oil pan
-reinstall AFC with proper connectors
-finish DIN Wideband guage and TT/EBC mounting
-weld LSD housing
-replace all fluids
-remove and paint misc. engine pieces
-mount radiator properly and replace fan with a smaller one
-straighten FMIC

Now for the Maybe's:
-DGM front lip
-CF hood
-new rims and tires
-coilovers
-'jdm look' exhaust
-GT28RS
-forged internals

If you guys want first gen Rx7 or maybe couple 2nd gen there guy by me that has about 30-40 rx7 he also a car dealer so I think he would sell them.

Other than that my winter mods are coming in the summer/fall since none of my cars currently can move themselfs.

My charger has seen the road in over a year since the bottom end got a rod knock. I got a sweet head intake setup for it that I need to bolt onto the new lower end.

My arrow has been very slow going.

My jeep died in july and recently getting around to put a new drivetrain out of a 93 grand cherokee.
Anyone know what I put in there?

myself before winter.... i'm looking for some 16" rims for Lexi, something cheap. i have snow tires already in 16" and i'm debating finding rims for those tires, or spending $120 each for 17" snow tires. i wish i would have gotten the 2.5RS or Legacy, then the AWD would have been great in the winter whearas Lexi is worthless to be honest with you.

the GLH should be getting her new slug in the next week or two i really hope. I picked up some good race tires and would like to try them out yet this season... we'll see how that goes. if she gets her new slug, she'll get her Xmas/Winter upgrades early as well.

Hopefully will do in the spring.
Also looking to upgrade mufflers to Flowmaster 40's or 50's (depends on which sound I prefer).

That will probably be the last of the mods done until I paint the car (which will be very serious coin+$5K. It needs to go down to the gel coat, and I've got body work that needs to be done :( ).

I don't give a fuck if people laugh at me. I do like Evo's but that's not the car I would get. I can't reveal that! What's the point of getting an Evo when the husband has one anyways? The only reason I would consider an Evo is so that then I could actually drive my car. I don't believe they break the way DSM's do. Anyways, I will probably just keep my GSX and slap whatever I can on it over winter so that no one will be able to touch it next year, not that anyone can now with it sitting in the garage :( It's a nice car, the body is in very good shape, has low mileage and a ton of $$ stuck into it.

Well my winter mod list is done.

The 18s and stick ickies worked out pretty nice.

The suspension wasn't as trouble free as I wanted but I got it sorted out. I figured out the binding issue I has was from too much preload on the spring. So I yanked them off and adjusted the preload..... all better now.

My latest winter mod: An EVO9 JDM rear bumper.

I also have a twin disk clutch but I'm going to beat on the stocker for a bit before doing the swap.

I had purchased a FMIC but turned around and sold it for some extra ching.

I found a guy that had almost identical track times as Darse. He swapped in the EVO8 fourth gear. With that being the only change he shaved 3 tenths and picked up 2 mph. Thats a pretty good return. I wonder what a new clutch and gear change would do for me.

The gear change and clutch is money lost. I can't take them out and recover my cash like I can with the rear bumper. Thats the only downside to doing it. The huge push to do it is I can't get any faster until the gearing is changed. Taller tires, higher RPM, or new gearing are my only options.

Thus I am at a fork in the EVO road. I do the clutch and tranny making my wallet $2000 lighter.... OR ....I skip making the car faster and live with the stock clutch and current power level for awhile.

My goal with the EVO was to run 12s. No need to go any faster. I wanted a solid daily driver that had decent performance.

I'm trying to be responsible and balance the quest to go faster by means of power because that path of destruction has no end.

I have decided NO BOTTLE for me. The car is still to new to punish in that manner.

I plan on putting deicer wiper fluid in the bravada. Thats the extent of winter mods. I must say though, the awd is GREAT in the snow so far. Not as fun to drive in snow as the prelude was (if the snow was shallow enough..), but safer at least!

It sucks not having stuff to do to my car.

When I bought this damn thing I wanted to make minimal changes and see decent returns. Ok that is done.

Now.... the god damn voices are back! They say shit like.... SPRAY THE WORLD AT IT .... no wait that was John ... FUCKER!!!!

I wish I could just stop thinking about making the car faster. The problem I have a knack for finding cheap parts and they call my name. There are O2 housings, intercooler pipes, intakes, boost controllers, and port matching that should add close to 50hp. So far I've been fighting the cumpulsive need to buy more go fast parts. But it is hard to do.

The one thing I am going to upgrade is my muffler. I am looking for a less ricey more elegant 3" in/out muffler to compliment the look of the JDM bumper. If somone knows of a decent looking muffler I would appreciate link.

Look into a vibrant or ES 3" muffler. You can get stainless or stay low key with flat black. ES is a little better peice than the Vibrant but they look identical with the Vibrant being a little cheaper. I had an 2.5 ES on my old b16 hatch and I haven't heard a single car like it.

go with the magnaflow then. they are good mufflers.

also, i've had a AROSPEED in the past, all stainless. nice looking, good pricing. not sure if they're still around, but google them. i liked it.

I have a whole cat-back magna-flow on my car. I would say that the only down-fall on magna-flow is that they don't make 3in exhaust systems, only 2.5in.
