Quick question here. A friend of mine took his X5 to a dealership to have a CV boot replaced. A month later, he finds out the control arm bushings are bad.

My question is, should the dealership have inspected the bushings on the way to replacing the CV boot last month?

He's trying to determine if he should not have to pay for labor to take the system all apart again when they had it apart last month to do the CV boot and should have inspected the bushings at that time.

Thoughts?

Those control arm bushings are a common thing.. I would say if its only been a month then they knew they were bad and they should eat the labor

The dealership already said that he should pay for the labor.

My stance is if they just had it apart, they should have noticed the bushings were bad and suggested he replace them. Since they failed to do this, they should foot the bill for the labor.

I'm curious if the BMW service manual says to inspect the bushings during this process.

Greg.

Mechanics don't always catch everything.

They repair what they are told to repair.

Should the mechanic have caught this. Well probably, but there is a chance the bushings were OK when the CV boot was repaired.

I personally would tell your friend to drop this argument.

In America we are so quick to point the finger at someone. Someone is always to blame.

now-a-days if a mechanic says, hey, while we fixed part x, we noticed part y needs to be replaced as well. The car owner is probably instinctively wondering if the mechanic is trying to rip them off.

However, I'm thinking more private shop, not dealers.

Cool. Just thought we'd get some opinions!

Thanks for the insight guys!

I can tell you that in my short 2 years at a toyota dealership that alot of stuff goes unnoticed.
It could have been overlooked easily if they were really busy as well.
