View Full Version : I need a new hard drive

VPT

I left my puter on 24-7 for the last 5 years and I think the hard drive is just fucked. I can wipe out the hard drive and do a reinstall and the thing still runs like crap. So, I have this skinnier than most puter cases, dell and I was woundering if anyone knows if I need a small case specific hard drive or will just a normal hard drive fit? Any suggestions on a good hard drive? Best buy be good enough? Anything else I should replace while I'm at it?

most likely a standard HDD will fit just fine. I can get you something used for free if you want. otherwise I can also get you something new for cheap. Are you sure its the Hard drive however???

No I'm not sure, but 5 years of non stop friction on a metal disc can't be good.?.

If that didn't do it I am sure all of the porn, virus's, windows reinstalls, ect. help take a toll.

What else is left besides motherboard to make it slow?

Did it suddenly start performing different than normal, or has this been just sort of a gradual slowdown? I'm assuming that you're running Windows 2000 or XP as the operating system.

If you do a lot of creating, copying, and deleting of files, the hard drive can become fragmented, meaning that one file may be spread out to several different places on the hard drive. A defragmentation (start/programs/accessories/system tools/disk defragmentation) can help a lot sometimes.

Also, if the drive is nearly full, sometimes the free space is fragmented, and since the operating system uses "Virtual Memory" when the system's RAM gets full, that can slow things down as it seeks across the disk to use the VM.
I'd suggest, that after the defrag, you change the systems Pagefile (what it uses as virtual memory) to a specific size (1.5 to 2 times the amount of system RAM) rather than letting the OS choose its size. To get there, you can right-click on "My Computer" then select properties, then advanced, performance, then depending on win2k or xp, go in another level, and change the virtual memory size.

A newer hard drive could help, especially one with a larger cache, or a higher rpm. 7200rpm drives are noticeably faster than 5400 ones, as 8mb cache ones are a little quicker than 4mb cache ones. Another big speed increase can be had on the data transfer speed, depending on what your motherboard will support.

if it was a sudden change in speed, it could be that one of the RAM modules is starting to fail, which is an easy fix as well.

I'd also make sure to clean the dust and such out of your heatsink and fan on the motherboard, since that will keep heat in, which will eventually make it fail, and sometimes the systems will limit processor speed when the temperature gets too high.

good luck...

there are lots of things that will cause a computer to run slow. Hard Drives should last longer than 5 years, I see them go 7+ years all the time. would you like me to drop off a used Hard Drive for you to try? I could even pre-load it with windows XP Home or Pro, and all you will have to do is install it, turn the system on, let it load, and put in your WinXP key.

I'm not saying it is completely shot, I just think the hard drive surface had been run on for so long that it isn't all nice and good anymore.

The 7+ years, are those continualy running 24 hours a day 7 days a week like mine?

Plus I have done ALOT of gaming, reinstalls, ect. that I think are very hard on a hard drive.?

Thanks for the offer to try one but I think if I'm going to do it I will just get a new one. I have an old gateway case that I have been wanting to put everything in for the longest time too. Mainly because it is a normal size case and I could get my radeon card to sit in there right. Plus there will be more room for fans, air, and junk.

well, if you are not using your computer, the hard drive is most likely set to shut itself off after an hour or so of no activity. If you want a new HDD, PM me and I can get you some good prices.

VPT
09-06-2007, 11:54 AM
It really doesn't, I can come down by the puter just about any time and I can hear the hard drive running. Maybe I should just get a whole new puter.

I'll pm you for some info and prices and whatnot. Maybe we can get a pr3 into this pig and make it real fast!

Speaking of compy's... I fired up Urban Terror last night for the first time in about three years. Found out I was a couple versions behind and had to update somewhat. Eventually I was shooting peoples heads off like in the good ol' days. There was only one thing missing though...Jeske and VPT. Do you guys still play this at all anymore. Maybe we should get another LAN party going sometime.

I wasn't very excited about 7 either but eh whatever.

urt or UT?

urban terror is way way way way way better than that 1980's graffics and game play cs. Urban terror you can't shoot threw walls and the grenades aren't the size of basketballs. UT has real maps not just a arena that people run around in circles in. I just like UT much more than cs for just about every aspect of the game.

I was asking about Urban Terror (urT), not Unreal Tournament (UT), but compared to Counter-Strike:Source, (cs:s). I really actually love the Source engine, as it has MUCH better physics and textures than the original HL engine. I do think it was somewhat lame for basically no real new maps for cs:s though.

Urban Terror uses the Quake3 Arena engine, correct? I haven'tplayed that game in several years, since compared to the newer games, the graphics are kinda poopy and cartoony.

I haven't actually played any multiplayer FPS in awhile, just been too damned busy, but I was making my way through STALKER:shadows of Chernobyl (very very good game engine) and FEAR.

I played a little bit of R6:Vegas, but I'm kinda disappointed that they just made a port of the console game, rather than a real PC game. the controls and UI are just lacking when done that way. FPS games should never have been put on a console, it's just lame.

So, depending on when you guys decide to have another LAN, I'll try to come up and play.
