View Full Version : 2012 Ice Season
TomKat

Talked to our CWSCC plow guy last night (Clay). He has found us a new larger shallower location in Wausau.
The ice season is looking good. Now we need some cold for freezing the water.
And where is this mystery location?

To far to travel. The further away it is the less people will go. Know why there were so many people on McDill in winter? Because it was a mile away.

Closer for me! lol. I know a lot of lake wausau is kinda rough as well, but should be good as long as ya stay away from where everyone usually drives for ice fishing. And watch out for drunk people. lol!

Events? It used to be just the meeting spot for winter and people racing in circles. Go out when you want, go in when you've had enough for awhile, risk of getting bumped.
Now its all rules and order, sit and watch one car drive around.

Not everyone is as gun ho about ice racing as you happen to be. Make the events further and those people are less likely to come. 80% of the time I came to help out.. not bash my car up on a frozen lake.

^LMAO at that comment, but who are you referring to? If it's at all directed my way. I came out to Dubay to help, because I was asked to specifically. Which obviously I did. Never came out with intentions to race as I'm horrible at ice racing, and even when told to go make some runs I generally declined. Off the top of my head, estimated 6 times out for the whole season, might have ran two events one of which was after the actual event just for fun. I'll just assume your comments are towards someone else, and LOL with you.
If I was going to events with full intentions to compete in the events sure, where ever, but to drive an extra hour (there and back combined) to help out. Well it's easy to see why I would prefer to see Dubay as the location.

Just a question, for those who have experience.
What provides more traction on the ice? Bolted tires or tires with screws threaded into the tire (more like a factory studded winter tire)
Is the difference in traction substantial?

factory studded winter tires are worthless. Tirerack did some tests, and the X-pilot snows stopped better than winterforces with the studs.
Are you talking about the Kold-Kutters?
Depending how you build the bolted tires, they offer the most grip unless you do the "VelcroTire™. " tires.

Yes I was referring to Kold kutters, if the grip loss was say less than 10%-20% short of a bolted tires I would consider trying a set of those out as they are a lot easier and fairly cheap to produce. I'm still on the fence about the ice racing, having never been able to try studs out to see if I like it. Ice racing might be fun if I had traction.. At the current state of my driving ability, was not having to much fun with just the snow tires. I just don't seem to have a nack for it.
I also liked the idea of not having to worry about air leaking out of the tire, I'm going to be doing some research to see if I can come up with some idea on how to better seal bolted style studs.
Dizmm
10-24-2011, 12:09 PM
you can try my bolted tires on your WRX. Bolted tires offer at least twice the grip of the kold-kutters.

The season usually begins around the 2nd week of January, but this of course depends on the weather. Some years there is never safe ice. Some years the ice is safe in December.
Here is a good thread thanks to Sarge on studding tires.

Winnebego is closer to me, but they have to many rules and regulations. Ill peobably try out both. I m not sure if we can use home made studded tires in Winnebego. I know someone that lives in Wausau that has a lot of spare parts for my car so im probably going to be up in Wausau more often.

Not necessarily true, my studded tires only have 162 per tire and thats on 275s. The vette has amazing grip on clean ice but once you get some snow its slippery. My hypothesis on this is that by spacing the studs out more each stud grips a larger contact patch of ice so it sticks into it and grips instead of just shredding it up if you have the studs to close. Which works great on cleaner ice but hurts once you get some snow (such as if people go off course and track snow back onto it).
You also have to consider your vehicle weight, get to many studs in the tire and then you may not have enough weight to push the studs far enough into the ice at speed to get maximum grip.
Then there is also tire width, skinnier tires work better with snow but you lose width for more studs and stud spacing on clean ice.
And to just throw another option to consider to make it even more complex is your stud pattern. I went for an alternating pattern to optimize the number of studs contacting the ice at any given point and to optimize the number of studs coming into contact next as the tire rotates. I did this for multiple slip angles (straight line grip, turning grip, sliding). I also configured the stud pattern to make sure that each stud doesn't follow to close to the next one as the tire is rotating to make sure its not just digging into the hole in the ice the previous stud just made.
Just my $.02

I plan on coming back up from Platteville. Goingto try my luck with the At's this year and maybe make up a studded set. What im more excited about is my clubs secret project car that will hopefully be running some ice rally this year  2200lbs and 150 whp, fwd studded, should be fun right?

Clubs secret project car. Oh boy.
CWSCC needs a secret project car. We already have a secret agenda now we just need to compliment that with a secret car.

awww, VelcroTire™ studding technique is not legal!
interesting note, their formula for number of studs (section width x 1.08) makes the 13" menards tire *technically* illegal.
155/80-13. section width = 155. 155 x 1.08 = 167.4. However, the tire has 168 studs. ILLEGAL, as it's over the allotted ratio.
heh.
That makes my 195/60-14 bald azenis viable for 210.6 studs per tire. I've only got 108 bolts in them right now.

With temps being in the mid 30's for the better part of this week, I'd say the ones with permanent shacks should probably get their shit off before the shacks transform into fish cribs.

Just an FYI, use transfer cases are only like $150-250. The bill to open one up and put parts in isn't normally worth it.

it will take more than that to melt. the snow on top will help insulate the ice. this could be a good thing really. melt most of the snow thats on top. Probably help reduce the ruts.

Good job! Sounds like a blast!
I spent the day taking apart my entire shifter linkage and fixing it. There were literally NO bushings in the knuckle that connects to the shift rod going into the transmission. So even when in gear, you could wobble the shifter like it was in neutral. Made it hard to shift sometimes, but now it's freakin' awesome! I found I've got a torn CV boot, though, and I want to replace the VC gaskets. (watch out for Charlie!!!)
MrFuji, How'd the tires work for you? I see by your first place they worked ok, but what're your impressions of them otherwise?
How was the course itself? is it a pretty decent venue?
