View Full Version : Oct. 9th event at USAIR, 3-Lap AutoX.

Update (10-03-2011):

Well I only have 2 people pre-reg'd for the lapping day. We are going to call an audible as insurance alone is $1200. I dont foresee us getting many more pre-reg's to pay for the event.

Instead we are going to do an autoX event. AutoX events are MUCH cheaper to insure. but this wont be like any normal autoX at USAIR. It will be a 3 full lap auto-x, timed, no cones, and you will be on track by yourself.

The cost will be $35members, $45non members.

Registration will be from 9am - 10am

-----------------------

We scheduled it as a lapping day, but with the cost of insuring lapping days having tripled it's not likely we would get enough of a turnout to stay in the black.

Some options:

-autocross

-multiple lap autocross

-transponder style HPDE

-try to get enough people for a lapping day

Any other ideas?

transpoder style HPDE? where would we get those from? I like that idea...

I think it'd be cool to set up a really long course, then divide it into many smaller sections with one heat per section. Because each course is so small you could have only 2-4 people working and everyone else driving so you'd move through each "sub course" quickly throughout the day even with 5-6 runs per heat because it'd be short. Really learn where you're slow/fast compared to others, then find out what they do right/wrong.

Just a thought/way around not having multiple eyes to tell you where your fast/slow during one long course.

Multiple lap autocross sounds cool too

05Saab
09-21-2011, 03:05 PM
Or do a large course, where you use the transitions as well. It would be a 1 car on track at a time thing most likely, but it'd make things interesting

Higher speeds. Above 70 you can't classify it,as a autox. My stock junk hits 70+ on the back stretch of usair.

6 times more expensive. Not sure why, but yeah speeds at an autocross aren't supposed to exceed 70mph.

Do online preregistration with full payment. If you can't get enough cancel and refund. State the minimum required registered for the event to happen on the preregistration form with the terms.

This has been done in the past with bad results. Very few people will pre-register and commit for an event that could be canceled.

No. We have to discuss a bunch of crazy options then get all pissed off at each other and say a bunch of mean stuff we don't mean.

Then we can do just an autocross.

Well let me know what it's gonna be. I'd say if it were advertised as a lapping day it should be a lapping day. Worst case, the club loses a little money. Big deal it has plenty.

It's not the club losing money. It's about the track not letting us do any more events because of poor turnouts.

Besides you are thinking about FVSCC having plent of money. That they do.

CWSCC is new and is hardly flush with cash. This year we are barely breaking even, but that's OK this car club stuff isn't about making money.

Okay. I'm catching your drift. It seems odd that the track would rather you not run an event than run one regardless of the turn out. I'll try to make whatever event it turns into because I want to kill those hoosiers.

TomKat

An autocross will still bring the track some $$$ if the turnout is smaller.

I want to kill my Hoosiers also.

I prefer lapping days, because they're less hard on my car, and I'm not a very good driver. That said, I just enjoy the lapping a bit more.

Just my $0.02.

[EDIT]: If the autocross is set up like the video below, it looks like a lot of fun and I would try to participate!

Why do you think lapping day turn out will be lower than autox?

We need 3X the turnout for a lapping day to break even.

AutoX insurance is $200
Lapping day is $1200.

Keep in mind this is only insurance, we need to make the track money too.

I run them until they are close to the rivets.

I had planned on attending the afternoon lapping session. Due to this venue change I will not be able to participate in the autox event. If anyone wants to run my Hoosiers ill let them go for $75. I'll even let you use the rims they are on. Let me know.

Dizmm
10-04-2011, 12:53 PM
I had no pre-registration for a Jeff Jeske. If we would have had maybe 8-10 pre-reg'ed I'd say lets just keep it a lapping day. The club cannot really afford a $1000 hit.

I think most will like the 3 lap autox time attack style event. its cheap, better than a normal autoX, and will get a good amount of track time.

EVILUTION
10-04-2011, 01:13 PM

Then why not take it a step further and make it a ten lap, bring a transponder/timer if timing requires it, and have multiple cars on the track?

What's the differentiator for the insurance costs? The multiple cars at a time part?

EVILUTION
10-04-2011, 11:08 PM
I'd do something similar to what BHF's does. Call it an autox but have a couple hours of "practice laps" that precede the one and only timed run that you get at the end of the day!

Not sure why the lapping day costs $1,000 more than an autocross. I would think it should be cheaper.

Lapping day means cars are out in groups with passing. we can have lap practice but no one can pass.

If we had some transponders to rent out or something that would be great.

We can do the HSAX-BHF format but you wont have a real lap time. There is no real pit on/off at USAIR.

You are not an odd duck. There are autocross people and there are lapping day people. Few cross over to both events.

Both events are fun and we wanted to do a lapping day, but not much interest probably because we just had a lapping day at this track.

I am excited for the autocross it should be fun. Now I just have to be a good boy at the wedding I am attending in Madison the night before so I can drive home that night and be ready for this.

I had problems the last time on this track with my new supra (wheels rubbing fender liners) and have since changed to larger bump stops and played with the ride height so the wheel should not be able to rub. Before the first runs will we have some time out on track there or can I do a quick lap just to make sure it will not rub out there? The car literally rubbed on the 1st or 2nd corner during the lapping day so it should not take long for me to know if I am ok or not. I will have what I need to raise it if need be.

Two of Evil's Hoosiers are good enough where they would still have good grip. One of them is just barely starting to cord. You could put that one on the right rear. I'd say they would make it through a HSAX. I could try to save one of mine after this weekend for a backup.

The multiple lap stuff will depend on turnout. If more than 20 people want to participate timing and track limitations will make doing the multiple lap almost impossible. Thanks Fronzoos.

aarnagel - I understand your concern. This schedule is what we will be following:

Schedule:

8:45am -10am - Registration
10am - 10:15am - Late registration
8:46am - 11am - Tech
9am - 10:30am - Autocross practice
10:40am - Drivers meeting
11:00 - First car out for timed runs

I liked the idea of a multiple lap autocross, but at the time we were assuming transponders would be used. Transponders are not available and with our timing equipment doing a multiple lap event would slow runs down to a crawl. You'd get one run every 1.5 hours if 20 people enter the event.

There will be an hour and a half of practice followed by timed runs in the usual direction with no cones. Well no cones on the track - the usual amount of cones will be on the track to keep cars off the grass.

There will be no passing during practice and you will have to stop between laps. Being ready to go at 9am will get you the most practice track time.

anyone have any pics of the white evo?

Go to bed man. Had to pass you on the way home to make sure you were still awake haha. Then that bastard with the canoe strapped to his roof cut me off good thing I was practicing all day.

Thanks for letting drive the Green Monster Dizmm. I haven't experienced an adreneline rush like that in a long time!
