Last night I decided to attend the street drags at the LaCrosse Speedway in West Salem.

I met up with Doc (CWSCC founding member) who was running his V-Max drag bike.

It was an awesome event and I had a blast. They were a little lax on safety, but they kept things flowing and we did a shit load of drag racing. You register at the gate - only $10 for entry then you pit on the inside of the oval. A half hour or so of practice runs (I got 4 practice runs in) then they start with the program.

The have a home made tree which works like a pro tree. When you pull up to the line you better be ready to go and when you see the yellow you better be moving. At the finish line (which they didn't have marked very well) there is someone watching that lights up an indicator as to who won.

This is like a short sprint 1/8 mile or less right?

You race for 300 feet. I thought that was really short, but once I did it a few times that seemed far enough. I had to shift into 3rd gear. Launch was very important, but a powerful car could still pull ahead at the finish. The bikes and the really fast classes race for 250 feet.

There were a lot of different cars there. In the unlimited class pro-street style cars and even a couple of drag DSMs with drag slicks on all 4 wheels. A tubbed out Vette won the unlimited class.

You can't do a standing burnout. No burnout box. All you can do it burn the tires for 100 feet or so up to the starting line.

While Doc was racing another bike with and extended swing arm the guy lost it at the finish laying the bike down sliding into the wall at turn 1. Luckily they had foam block in front of the wall. He walked away.

I was put into AWD stock (ish) class. Ended up racing DSMGirls old red DSM a couple of times. I could get him off the line, but then he was pulling on me like crazy at the end. Didn't have enought time to catch me though and even lost it in the corner after the finish line (kind of added to the excitemet). All he races I had were really close so getting off the line and making quick flawless shifts was key.

Ended up racing another STi in the final round best 2 out of 3 match. It was really close, but I only lost once.

Good times. Since LaCrosse doesn't have a drag strip I thought this event was a really great idea for drag racers. I'm going to contact the guy at the Marshfield Speedway and try to talk him into a program like this.

Race for 100 yards? Well that sounds like pure fun right there!

In drag racing it really doesn't matter how far you go.

Drag racing is pretty much about launch. How you get off the line and your reaction time.

You can race for an 1/8th mile, 1/4 mile, 1 mile. It's all pretty much the same.

I thought racing for 300 feet was dumb too until I tried it. What the guys in LaCrosse are doing is making due with what they have. I'm not saying it was the coolest thing in the world, but for what is was I enjoyed it.

I win all my races with 4rd gear in poopy, just ask everyone I beat. 100 yard race is one block in town from stop light to stop light, you barely even break the 25mph speed limit.

I couldn't find anyone that qualifies to ask.

I'd go if it was in Marshfield...

No idea. I was getting into 3rd with the STi. I'll have to look up how fast that is, but there were way faster cars than mine there.

There is no timing or trap speed at LaCrosse. If we did do it in Marshfield I'd try to hook up with the Merril Ice Draggers to see if we could use their portable tree and timing equipment. We also have a radar gun we could use.

Their equipment trailer sits about 3 houses down from mine. I can probably go over and ask him about it

That would be cool. I've talked to one of them in the past. He was very helpful and I would think those guys would be interested in short drag racing since they do 1/8 mile on the ice.
