Pay at the gate. I'm sure the pavement on the access road did not get fixed. We will have to figure another way to run the course.

We're going to be using a different track set-up tomorrow so the pit area will probably be different than what has been used in the past. Don't set up camp until you have heard where the pits will be.
The road we usually use to enter the big oval is not useable so another plan is in the works.
As alway no jacking of cars on the big oval.
Thanks.

Disappointed in the turnout especially with the great weather, but we did have a lot of fun.
I was joking with Dizmm about making a roundabout on the infield, but he went ahead with it. Really challenging to get through all the gates, but once through you could really open it up on the big oval.
Good times.

I dont know what to think about the infield. you had to be really quick with the wheel. Lots of hit cones. [Sorry corner-workers]
I'll get the 60ft times up tonight.
Not sure where everyone was this weekend. only 20some drivers. Was it all the fair stuff going on?
Regardless, some good driving. Shane laying the smack down on his NoSeason tires. Nick taking 2nd on PAX in his rookie year. Lots of new names in the top! Nice driving guys.

Wish I knew which cone I was hitting. Had to be the same one everytime. I never felt it and only knew I hit a cone on every single run when someone told me on my very last run. To bad I didn't figure it out sooner so I knew which one to avoid since was running pretty consistant low times.

It was nice to have something new in the infield, even though it was really hard if you got it just right it was fun. However I think a few more cones could of been used to help me from getting some DNF's that I couldn't even tell I was completing.
Another thought that just came to mind a lot of people were saying they didn't know what cone they hit, what if.. we could put a radio in the cars on track, that way they could maybe hear the corner works cal in the cones and get some sort of idea. Maybe not exactly but it would alert them with a general idea to pay more attention in certain area's on course.
Dizmm
08-23-2011, 11:27 AM
i'd like to see if we can implement some sort of display or something showing if you hit a cone or not at the end by the display. As for during the run, i'd prefer if I didnt know that i hit a cone. I'd like to know what cone i hit, but somehow inform me when my run is complete. We could number all the cones and when the corner worker calls in the cones, they'd call in what cone you hit. Maybe we can inform the starter so on your next run, he/she will tell you where exactly you hit the cone.

That sounds expensive and like a heck of a lot of work, and confusion. Not to mention you need to add work for the corner workers, and now you have to remember every numbered cone on course. Why not just have the option then for those who wants a radio in car and those who do not?

Didn't you have a radio that would broadcast over our radio? I thought that was what SCCA run events do?

Well its going to be more work regardless.
If a driver wants a radio in there car thats fine. Some even bring their own handheld radio to tune into whats going on. however that still doesnt really tell you where you hit the cone. some cone calls dont get called in right away.
FM radio, that means we need someone just to announce. I do like that idea, but will cost more and requires additional workers. FVSCC does have an FM transmitter.
If we numbered the cones, each cone would have the number written(painted) on the outside of the cone. when you go to fix the cone you'll see what number it is. when you call the cone in, you say "car # 45, cone #57." This to me is the only way to know for sure what cone you hit.
For some reason, many people (myself included) could not tell when a cone was hit. not sure why, but I agree it would be very helpful to know if/where the cone was hit.
SgtRauksauff
08-23-2011, 12:15 PM
At the madison events, at least in the past, the hand-written times (still done even though the computerized system works, for when (not if) something happens to the computer) had boxes that you'd put hash marks in for downed cones, according to what corner. which is fine if there's a person watching for what corner the cones were hit at.
With longer courses and corners farther apart, this is easier, . "car 86 two cones corner 1. car 86 two cones corner 1." "car 86 five cones corner three. car 86 five cones corner three."
usually there was somebody in the timing bus that saw what corner it was at
you can get the stats, but run into issues of communication being garbled because corner two is on the ball, but maybe corner one had to run out to the cone to see if the wobbled cone actually was out of the box.
for individual cone recognition, you'd maybe set up an RFID system, so that if a cone was moved or tipped, it would send the signal. Software would have to be written and/or purchased for this, and to make the timing software tell that to the display would approximately triple the price of the display and the software, each. Plus there's the purchase of the RFID tags and stuff.
If we were racing for money, this would easily be doable. But we're not. We're racing for T-shirts or little plastic trophies.
Dangit, I wish I could've come up there last weekend, I need a set of magnetic numbers since mine blew off on the way home from Brainerd.

Dizmm
08-23-2011, 12:21 PM
No RFID would be needed if the corner worker just called in the cone's # ID, then the person writting down the times by hand will write what exact cone the driver hit.
Deadly_Evolution
08-23-2011, 12:29 PM
Meh we're all just nit picking now, just leave it how it was. because personally I don't want to call in cone numbers, and run my ass off for cones, try and see car numbers, not get hit, try and put the right numbered cone back in the right spots and so on. We often need replacement cones, then the cones have to be sorted for use, like I said it just adds way to much extra crap to keep track off. I will bring a radio with me if I ever feel the need to know I was hitting cones.

we usually have extra radios and can give out a few, just not one for everyone.
it would be more work for the corner workers and if we continue with small turnouts, that becomes even more difficult.
rsxkid
08-23-2011, 12:48 PM
I think the whole cone thing is a great idea. All you'd really need is 10-20 numbered cones for the average course to cover the "oh damn that's close" cones. Realistically 80% of the cones out there if you hit them tou know damn well you hit because you plowed way off a good line.

At SCCA Nationals the number the cones and record exactly which cones you hit.
That takes a lot of work and organization.
I like the idea of something on the display that lets you know you hit a cone. Also the FM transmitter could be a doable option.

It wouldn't take that bright of a person or someone good with math to figure out that if you did wave someone by at an autocross he will get a good time recorded and the passing car will get a horrible time.
SnowX is an engineer by the way. They are good at number crunching.
