This does look like fun! I'll be at Road America that Friday, maybe I'll just sleep in the R and drive further North.
Can you all talk a little about the rally? Do people hang out and watch the races all day, and camp? Hotels?
More info would be great. I'm considering making the trip to watch.
TomKat
08-09-2011, 04:34 PM
You'd have to leave pretty early Saturday morning to see anything at LSPR. That's a long drive.
We stay at a hotel and work corners for the event which is the best way to enjoy the event in my opinion. Hanging out at a corner is usually what we do waiting for the cars to go by. Otherwise you can go to spectator areas and watch the action from there.

We have to stop at that convenience store on the way there and/or back. Far better pasties than the grocery store.

Can we just show up on Sunday? It is their 2-day event. Does registration close on Saturday?
I went every year from about 2002 to 2009. Every year, it got more and more crowded, the marshals became more and more strict, and the spectator locations got worse and worse. Last time I went I brought a cordless sawzall to cut down brush from the areas so I could actually see what was going on. Has it improved at all? Or does it still suck?
And 2009...
http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/8133_178412754743_503279743_3728523_6854383_n.jpg

Keep in mind that if you go, this is exactly the type of shit you will NOT be allowed to see. The spectator areas are behind bushes, trees, and brush. Getting a decent photo from any of them will be extremely hard. Even seeing stuff will be difficult, as the spectator areas are extremely small and in extremely poor locations.
Why they don't just charge $50 and have you sign a waiver that allows you to walk into the woods near some big ass trees is beyond me.

I'm not sure yet if I'll have to do the alternate. Depends on if I can scrounge some tires to make it worthwhile for me to drive in the HSAX. I could run the Hoosier Bias ply's that I used at Brainerd, but I'm pretty sure I won't get a decent time with them, as they're half used. as in bald on the outside, treaded on the inside. John Burget is the man! I called him yesterday about the knife-wound in the sidewall of my Hoosier, and he said he'd get me another one. I drove down there yesterday, but he didn't actually have the 22.5x9.0x13 F2000 Hoosier in stock. so he gave me four Hankook Ventus C90 in the same size. So I'm good to go for tires for BHF! unless it rains, hmm.....
I wish we were leaving earlier on thursday. It would give us more time up there to visit with the rally teams.

Man did we have some bad weather out there this year...not to mention bad luck. The rally Datsun lost its new motor on stage 5. Hopefully we will tear it down in the near future but it will depend on the driver/owner.

I follow a team from mn, zip tie rally, they lost a diff and something else on their newly built subaru and dnf'd.

Yep we were right by them. They had pretty typical luck building a car in 2 months after wrecking their last one @ Rally MN. Still sucks though as none of their issues really should have ended a rally, just silly problems that could not be remedied intime before the rally (axles popping out of diff's bc they are too short). I am really liking their new car.

It was a good time as always. Rained the entire time we were there and made for some muddy conditions.
SkaTie lived up to her name skating down the wet highways, and muddy stage roads on Falken Azenis. Ha ha.
We ended up working start and finish for passmore stage.

Working this year was very eventful. Under pressure the whole time the cars are making their runs. Usually when we work a corner there is all sorts of down time waiting for the rally cars to go by. I was planning on taking a nap, cooking some dinner, relaxing. Nope. We were busy as hell the whole time we were working. Setting up signs, learning how to work the timing, etc.

Don't know. We were so busy doing stuff I never had a chance to even try it.
Thanks anyways. Is it OK if I return it at Taco Tuesday?

they were using 147.390, and it was set to 147.310. It took a lot of trial and error to figure out how to change the tune, it's not the most logical interface. Once I got it set, we could hear things ok, although a better antenna would've worked a hell of a lot better. But since we were at start, and busy 100% of the time, we didn't even really use it at all.
Thanks though!!

Wish we would have had communications, it was a bit slow in our spot. The distance was too great for walkies.

here's an interesting link about one of the rally teams. Duct-taped an EVO windshield onto their car after rolling so they could continue...

Press on Regardless. How true.
One thing different this year is the few workers they had helping with the event. The stages we worked were short about 5 people. They had to leave some of the intersections unmanned.

Yeah, anytime the weather comes down all the pansies stay home. I ended up working a start control on Saturday, I'd seen enough cars at speed while stranded on the side of the stage.
Thanks again for working, it takes alot to keep the rally running.
