JW.....and excuse me if I sound like an ass, but whats the difference in the LS1 that was in the 04 Goat as opposed to the LS1 that came in the car? Did you buy it without a motor or something?

He bought it with a bad motor.

If he got the intake with it...LS6 intake, LS6 windowed block, LS6 243 casting heads but without the longer, lighter sodium filled valves. The 04 GTO LS1 is more of a factory tiny cammed LS6 than like LS1 from 97-02 in the 'vettes and F-bodies

Engine has 241 heads, and came without an intake.
Engine is basically the same between the GTOand Camaro. Stock Stock Stock.
I have the stock 16s for F stock fun too.

Rims fit fine. I had to machine the center hubs out on the wheels by .5mm, but they fit and have no problems.
Dizzm, the only thing I have learned is that Ford sucks, Honda is for small Chinks, Mitsubishi = EpicFail, and I like GM cars. I love the car, and am for the first time in my life Brand loyal as of now. Will be keeping the car forever with plans on passing it down to my son someday possibly. So you and your Honda can suck a fat one biotch!
Best part is I only paid 1800 for the complete car with a good title, and only the blown engine.

Little update on the car, and some questions for Dizzm or TK.
Well, the GTO engine didn't pan out the way I had hoped. Turns out I got jipped, and purchased a "good" engine that was in fact bad. Guess I wont buy a engine from a private party again.....After quite some time of being pissed and sulking I decided to pull the LS1 and found that #5 had a broken piston ringland. How did I find this out? Well, I found 2 small chunks of piston and half a compression ring in the oil pan :)
So instead of putting morwe money into that engine and wasting time, I made the decision to put a 5.3 in it with some prodding from NOS2GO from WSD.com
Got a 5.3 with a WARRANTY from a local salvage yard for cheap, and swapped her right in no problem. If anyone is wondering, the 5.3 LM7 is also a Ls gen III engine and the only difference between the LS1 and LM7 is about 9mm in bore size and a cast iron block instead of a alluminum block. Took a few days off last week from work, and worked out most of the kinks last weekend, and finally after 5 months of waiting i got to drive the car for more than 5 minutes and ENJOY it!!
So yeah, thats my cool story, and I hope to make it to Marshfield sunday.

So my question to Dizzm and Tk is what class does this swap put me it. Now consider I did add like 60lbs to the car and lost a few hp......ish.....
Please no SM fail bot......

with a motor swap you'd be lucky to still be SM eligible.
what i wanna know is why did you put a slower and heavier motor in there?
DirtyBird
08-15-2011, 07:14 PM
Just about the same power and tq output, much much cheaper and easier to find, and is more boost friendly ;)
Honestly, there is not a big difference in power, and the 5.3 resposnd VERY well to a cam/heads swap.
The difference in price between the LS1 and LM7 is HUGE! You can usually buy 3 or 4 5.3s for the price of a USED LS1.

And to be quite honest, this Camaro is faster than my old LT1, so I'm happy.

Gotta build these kinds of things on budgets, especially nowadays. The difference in weight isn't huge either, a supercharger or turbo kit would almost weight the same. The engine sits really far back too, so the weight dist. isn't affected as much as you would think.

Kinda hard to tell, but it looks like I'm going to be in EMod, or DMod?

Your putting another 93 pounds (180 vs 87) in the nose of a rwd car with 56/44 weight bias. No its going to be much worse then TK thinks

Thats what i told him!
might as well get some nice wide R-comps and strip out the interior to lighten it up a bit hahaha!

I think you mean what Dirtybird thinks. I didn't give an opinion of this swap other than it was cheaper.
It will be intersting to see how this car runs out at an autocross.

Your SCCA classing is screwed. Like Andy said, you'd be lucky to still be SM eligible...

I've been thinking about this.
In my opinion DirtyBirds car should be able to run in stock class - unless there are other mods done to disqualify it. The motor swap obviously won't help him. In the spirit of the rules and in the spirit of CWSCC and what CWSCC is all about I want to see Mike driving this car he's had for a while now, but hasn't been able to drive it due to some really bad luck.
I want to get Mike behind the wheel and see what he can do since he's a pretty darn good driver and not be screwed by classing rules. Yes technically it's not stock, but screw that. I'm sure VPT will have a cow over this, but that's OK by me.
From what I've been reading in this thread it sounds like Mike got some good advice help from NOS2GO. Thanks for helping out a fellow racer.

I dont care what class anyone runs in really. I would like to see Dirty Birdy out on the track though. I dont think i've seen him driving hard for a few years now.

Besides the 5.3 there really isn't anything to disqualify him from f-stock. He has a cat-back and his gto wheels I think are still stock f-body size.

I not trying to be a hater, I want to see him, or anybody out having fun for that matter. Its just a $300-400 iron block vs 600-700 for an all aluminum 5.3 whether it be his LM7 equal, the LM4 out of a Trailblazer or a L33 which has 310hp, 10:1 compression, and LS2 style heads. $2-400 buck swing is chicken shit money if he plans to AutoX it, esp when he's talking about a turbo... Fwiw, there's guys who are running over 700 rwhp on L33's through loose convertered Th350's so the iron block strength thought will not hold water either.

I think it was a few people that convinced him, why spend $2000 on the correct ls1 when the $400 5.3 will bolt right in.

There was the option of 17" wheels for the ls1 camaro, which are the same size as the gto wheels. The only other thing done to the car is I removed the EGR system and AIR pump to make it easier to work on in the future, but the 01-02 doesnt use a EGR system, so does that count?
BTW-
I dont really care to hear anybody telling me I should have bought this or that engine, 2 to 400 bucks may be chicken shit money to some people, but not to everyone. Thanks for your 2cents though ;) And yes, you are quite a hater.
Anyhow, it has been years since my last event, and I'm ready to drive no matter what class I will be put in. Figured out a good name for the car too. I will call her Redemption
