Hi people, just saw a vid on NASIOC of Road and Track TV and they had the EVO X against the new STI. It wasn't just magazine hacks tho, it was done by Tim O'Neille of rally school fame. The Evo is still the same (as far as I know) as when it was introduced in '08 and the STI has had some upgrades since its intro in '08.
The EVO looked better, more composed going through turns etc and had better lap times than the new STI.
Is the EVO X all that and a bag of chips? Is the STI not that good?
In autoX competition (in Milwaukee) I have seen them go head to head with really good drivers and they would only be hundreths of a sec apart. At season's end, the STI (both were '08 models) was points champion.
What do you guys think? I am thinking of a new or slightly used car in a year of two.
Discuss or... is this the same old stupid question????

No need to compare the two cars.

Just get a new V-6 Mustang.

or better yet, i hear hille is selling Rattle... a b16 powered CRX. although incorrectwheeldrive, it would probably hang with the likes of the EVO and STi given the proper driver.

I think it just comes down to personal preference if you are going leave it mostly stock.

Go drive an MR with that slick trans.

I am definitely thinking about it as a daily driver, so that sort of puts TK's CRX out of the mix. So does the V6 Mustang for me anyway, driving in the winter would not be very fun.
And yeah, I am thinking it would remain mostly stock, no coil overs, might do some ECU tuning.

Some of my thoughts lately make me lean toward the EVO. One is that I can get a used one that is as good as a new one (development-wise), and I remembered that the last USCC the EVO X won with catless ex, a tune and coilovers, and that would be something I could see doing for a daily driver--Maybe not the coilovers but mild suspension...
And I've been in Subies for a long time, its time to try something else!

They sure do make a nice daily driver while still being fast at the track , You can also fit some very aggressive wheels and tires under the fenders with no modification whatsoever.
It might be worth your while to call up frank. He has an Evo X MR for sale with the slick dual clutch transmission, I hear its a riot to drive :)

Edit: I realize your asking which is a better choice go drive both , the biggest smile wins.

The EVO X put a much better lap time down than the new STI at the VIR Lightning Lap test by Car and Driver.

Yes but we now know that car and drivers editors favor certain car companies , if they arent paid off they take turns spraying each others tires with wd40 before making their runs ,,,, ford paid them well this year .

I could drive the STi faster than the EVO I'm sure.

I disagree. Other magazine tests usually have similar results.

A few years back a Cobalt SS and the EVO X were really close on the Car and Driver test. The Motor Trend test confirmed it.

I wish I could afford to buy a new EVO X, a v-6 Mustang, and a STI. Then take them to a track and see which one is faster. I'd still bet the results would be the same as what Car and Driver got. Since I don't have the capability to do this I'll just have to go with the magazine tests.

That wasn't the Lightning Lap test. That was in Europe and they probably only had one day to drive it so in the rain it was. Can't work around mother nature at manufacturers press introductions of cars.

I just read another article comparing the two and it said that the '08 EVO had a crap tune and now they have it sorted out, so that accounts for improved performance. It sounds like 0-60 and 1/4 mile times have really dropped from a couple of years ago. Mistu still rates the hp/tq the same from what I understand.
Also, they had a guy new to both cars drive them on a twisty canyon road and even tho the EVO is a couple of hundred pounds heavier, he said the EVO felt awesome and much lighter than the STI.

So, do you guys know if the '08-'09 EVO X have a factory reflash that brings it in line with the new model? I was looking around in EVO M and didn't really find anything--I think it is old news to folks in the know.
(really getting a jones for the EVO X!!)

There was a recall on the 08 for an ecu reflash for sure. I know someone that has an 08 that just took it in for the factory reflash. When you are ready, I am pretty sure he will sell it to you.

I'm still at least a year away from actually making a buy on anything. + I don't want anything that has been modded--not sure about your buddy, but being on here makes me think it has probably has been.
I would like to hear what he thinks of the before/after tho.
