That's kind of cool because Pete (former owner) used to record his lap times. Now I can see how I did with the car vs him.

His car being better in other areas made up for his suspension. shawano is a tire track, not a suspenion track.

Thats true, i noticed that on Sunday. My suspension actually felt to stiff for that track.
My dad(Ken) and Dale Used to always run Dales lap timer so those times is what i was using as a baseline.

I take it you werent running race tires?
I'm willing to bet its a 2-3 second difference from a good race tire to a good street tire. Also keep in mind you may have hit traffic. As i was timing i tried to watch and if you were held up i'd throw out the time, but i cant see the entire track from the start.

I should give this a try at the next one. maybe..... I'm actually pretty sure the Invo's wont be able to handle it..... Maybe the celica will be done? Who knows. 2 days and I find out if I get payed by the state VA. Should be around $820. I have about $870 saved right now for the motor, so the extra $820 will put me over the top.

Nope I had the star specs and they did get greasy towards the end of my sessions. He said he ran Shawno with star specs and only lost a second from r comps. I'll have a set of r comps by the next lapping day so I will see how much that makes a difference.

what times were they getting?
consistently 1:11.xx in Dales s2000 on slicks for both of them, don't really remember a specific fastest time though, I'd have to ask Dale to check his timer.

Thanks for posting up the times Andy! No surprise that you're at the top of the charts ;) Shame that Mike got me by a few tenths, but as I remember that was the session when he started out in front...it'll be interesting to see the times if / when we do a time attack-style event again.

I guess I'm slightly disappointed in a 1:19 as I thought last year I might have been clocked at a 1:18. Oh well something to shoot for I guess.
On a side note I got way less tire wear at the track this time. Not sure if its the coilovers helping with the understeer or if the tires are just at the point where the rubber isn't coming off? Who knows but now i can run these tires longer as I thought they would be dead after this event.

you were probably held up. We'll get you a new time, i'm sure your faster.
the coilovers will help wear. it will even out the wear which will prolong the life of the tire. even wear across the tire means your alignment settings are bang on.

i think his car had the stickiest out of all the stickies. I had a chance to drive his evo with the megans, and I could tell the difference in suspension.
There is no way you are telling me some $500 megans are equivalent to some $3000 ohlins. The only way this is true is if you dont track your car, so i guess in your case....your right evil.

Two of the nittos that were on my car are the ones that came with it and two are Evils old ones.
The two wheel corner damaged one of my SSR's on the inside. Not too bad but it is there.
Anywhich way, I am still suprised at how close I came to Smeds time. Crap suspension and no camber at all. And I drive like ass!!!

I definetly felt a lot smoother running this time. I'm still learning how hard to brake and then turn i'm pretty figidity when it comes to that. I also think I'm a bit apprehensive in diving the car into a turn because I don't want to go off and wreck something. I drive within my boundaries pretty well. I need to learn how to go outside of them.

Driving outside of your boundaries is going to lead up to a crash. Learing how to drive better with more seat time and raising your boundaries will produce faster and safer laps.

I haven't hit that point in my driving skill yet. I feel very comfortable on the track currently but when I try to do something outside of my bounds thats when trouble happens. THus far I've been able to keep it under control when i do get out of control but I'd rather not find out what will happen if I don't.

Other things you can improve on that wont sacrifice safty is your line. One spot specifically i saw was the track exit/entry part. i see lots of people taking the wrong line through there which not only hurts your time, but upsets the balance of the car (cough lotus, cough subaru sti, cough megan in TK's CRX).

Tire Test Results:
Goodyear Eagle 21.0 x 7.0 x 13 Spec Racer Ford slicks on 13x8 wheels are not the hot ticket. BUT, they are still better than any street tire I've used, and were pretty cheap too! Bias ply, so more bulging than the DOT-R's I've run in the past. Maybe having the 3° of negative camber in the front doesn't work as well for bias ply tires, but I did not have nearly the bite and turn-in that I did with the Hankooks last time. Even after several laps, and getting the tires painfully hot to the touch, it was easy to induce oversteer with just the throttle, not something that I was able to do with the Hankooks. But it was very easy to tell when the tires were sliding vs. sticking, and to modulate right at that edge. I think I need to set up the power steering system if I want to play drift much more, my wrists and forearms are actually a wee bit sore today from fighting the wheel.
It was a great day! Next time, I'm going to bring along something to bleed my brakes, I actually got them hot enough to actually need to! I wonder if it's because of the lower speeds, and the fact that I took my dryer vent tubes out. Two days at brainerd running higher speeds and braking harder than Shawano, and only at my very last run did the pedal start to get funky. Time to get some better brake ducts, especially before Milwaukee Mile!

I don't think it would be very impressive (lap times) there, but there is only one way to find out. Those tiny tires would hurt his top end.
Also doubt there is much drag on that to keep it planted at high speeds. Especially in the rear.
the-moss
08-19-2010, 09:52 AM
The fastest line is always the fastest line, however how you approach, enter and exit that line are the determining factors to make it work for each car. Not all cars can carry the same entry speed, maintain it and exit with it. The line however does not change.
That's not true, many factors determine the line a particular car should take. How much traction you have on corner exit is a huge determining factor in the best line for a particular car.
A low powered rear wheel drive car will probably take a pretty parabolic line through a turn, where as a high powered fwd car may take a sharper turn-in and start straightening out pretty early in order to be able to get the power down early.
When choosing a line for a particular turn (say turn 3) you are not trying to minimize your time from turn in to track out. You are trying to minimize your time from the track out of turn 2 to the turn-in for turn 4.
Deadly_Evolution
08-19-2010, 10:00 AM
The line the car takes due to mechanical limitations does not make it the fastest line. Maybe for that car and set up, but that does not make it the fastest line was my point.
I was agreeing with the original poster.
SgtRauksauff
08-19-2010, 11:21 AM
I know that with the Goodyears, I was having to take a sligtly different line than with my Hankooks. The hankooks had more grip, so with the Goodyears I had to brake earlier and not as abruptly. Which drastically affected my corner exit speed (and got my brakes heated up more than previously). So I was riding that line between spinning out and rotating smoothly. I had to make the turns as shallow as possible to keep the most traction and power, and even then couldn't get on the power nearly as soon as previously.. which affected the corner entry for the next corner, so I had to go a little slower to maintain traction.. it was just a big domino effect!

I dont know about that lol.Mustangs didnt seem to do so hot there..................I know i do have a goal also.Gonna try and go for the record held by the little blue blown hatch on massive slicks and wanna do it full weight and driven to the track and almost daily driven in summer.I need 3 seconds or so from his time this year.I think a lsd and slicks will drop some good time off and a little more seat time.
You do know that I had a 6K rev limiter, left it in 3rd gear the whole track and had my shitty tires on when I ran that time?

and i didnt say wanna beat him next year.I meant wanna beat the current record he has set.I feel car can run in the 1.13s with few things and more driving. If dont think just a lsd and slicks will drop a good chunk off alone something wrong.

cowboy boots for driving is bad!! not enough ankle flexion, which really ruins the heel-toe effect. plus, most of those boots have really smooth bottoms, and will mess with your pedal placement.
Granted, it's a mustang, and most likely meant for such boots, so there probably won't really be a problem.

Sarge. Everyone knows you have to have cowboy boots to ride a Mustang. Sheesh.
Years ago at a Milwaukee autocross there was a guy with a Trans Am next to me in grid wearing cowboy boots. LOL.

Btw why the hell would you leave in 3rd gear?
If I put it in second, it would instantly have to be shifted into third gear due to the 6K rev limiter. Rev limiter was due to not enough fuel.

I had never seen this thread before, and was wondering, does anyone know when someone first ran low 1:14s in a 2WD? 'Cause I ran this lap, which is around a 1:14.3-4 almost six and a half years ago. I think this was the first event ever here.

MR2,... = RWD.
we'll have to review that video, and have a meeting to vote on it. from there we'll send the video into our special boosted films director, he'll be in charge of examining the video for authenticity. Then we'll need you to sign a contract stating who you are, the car and mod list, and the day/time you ran said time. we need a blood sample too...
sorry standard procedure.

I can't say what they've changed since then, since I haven't been back since. Like I said, though, I think that day was the first time cars were driven on that track in anger, or pretty close. I recall that we were warned not to go off track onto their freshly sodded grass ( and a few people did, anyway ). The track surface was perfect, but green. I think I ran about 50 laps that day, and for the next couple years, I told everyone who would listen to drive up there and check out that track with you guys.
