I love manual machines. I only get to push buttons and watch the program run.

VPT
03-03-2010, 07:43 PM
Yes in fact it is. The screws on my 1942 lathe and 85ish grinder had a bit to much backlash for me. I ordered new precision acme threaded rods and than turned them down where needed. The machines feel like new again! I could have cut the whole screw from a solid bar stock but my leadscrew on the lathe is worn and that would show up in the new threads on the bar stock.

It is kind of neat pulling a part out, taking measurements, and reinstalling the part so you can use the machine to make its own part.

that last one looks kinda too kinky for me.....

:)

Depending on what Web Cams says, I may contract your services. Basically, the cam gears I bought have the hole slightly larger than the pin, so that there can be a degree or three difference between the two gears. When trying to dial in cam timing, three degrees is a LOT for this engine (toyota 4AGE.) So my thought is, when getting my new cams, see if they can make pins the size I need. if not, have VPT make a pin with the correct size to fit in the cam, with a shoulder that fits into the cam gears.

Guy, basic reading on your end would help first off... They would be $10 each if they COULD be purchased individually, which was NOT implied when he said $50 for a box. So was what VPT made a lot of work instead of spending $50, heck no. Basic elementary English grammar.

The conversation was started in the singular. A single plug was made.

Dizmm made a gibe at VPT, saying that such plugs could be had for fifty cents each. Still a singular subject.

VPT then quoted the price that Advance Auto gave him. A box of five plugs for fifty dollars. It was implied, not stated implicitly, that they could not be purchased individually. The price for an individual plug is easily understood from that statement of price. Still a singular subject, according to the context of the conversation.

Dizmm then wondered if the result of VPT's work was equivalent to the ten dollar price of a single plug. Still a singular subject.

You then took the statement of price out of context, either out of a lack of reading comprehension skill of the English language, or simply to be adversarial.

I then pointed out your contextual juxtaposition, hoping that it was just a misunderstanding on your part.

Apparently, my hopes are dashed, as you seem to be a complete imbecile.

Yes I would have had to buy the whole box for $50 and sell one to Frank for $10 so I would have been into my single plug for $40 and never need the other 3.

I had the aluminum to make the plug, the machine to make the plug, and the know how to make the plug. There is no wear on the lathe from making this one plug out of soft aluminum. All I have pretty much is my time into it which would have been wasted on the internet anyhow so the way I see it is I am $40 ahead and still have the part I needed without waiting.

That does not change the fact that the entire conversation was revolving around the comparison of the price of the fabrication of ONE plug, and the price of purchasing ONE plug. Your constant attempts to excogitate and to be gasconading by trying to be the genius your not was completely in vain..........Well, it wasn't in vain, because I was entertained. Since that was the entire point, the goal was achieved. Oh, and that should've been the contraction "you're" instead of the posessive "your". And actually, in 7th grade when they had us take some "IQ tests", my scores were actually above the minimum standards of "genius level". I don't particularly adhere to the whole intelligence quotient idea, though.

I might have an interesting project coming up soon, involving a lathe... How do you feel about turning down axle flanges so they fit inside a smaller rotor hat, turning the face a bit, and cutting the back side flat so the stud heads have a place to sit?

Basically, taking a toyota axle (6x5.5) and make it work as a 5x4.25.
within less than a quarter inch of the Volvo wheel mounting surface axle width, so just have to re-weld the suspension pickup points. cool part is, the supra diff fits right in with the right parts, so a good cheap (4-spider-gear) LSD with good ratio is not too hard to make. and it won't break, ever, with the power I'll be throwing at it.

Is your lathe long enough to fit an axle?

VPT
01-15-2011, 03:50 PM
Normally axle splines and anything within a couple inches of the splines is hardened. I may be able to turn it with carbide bits depending on the hardness. Most of the time anything hardened has to be ground or annealed.

I should be able to get it in my lathe, the area to be turned harness is the deciding factor.

SgtRauksauff
01-17-2011, 12:04 PM
not the splined end, the flange end. the axles start with a 5.5" bolt circle, I'll be turning the flanges down for a 4.25" bolt circle, and making them fit under the volvo rotor hats.

The entire reason for using this particular axle is that its wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface is the same as what the Volvo already has. So, no narrowing needs to be done, juts re-drilling the axles so the bolt circle works, and making them fit under the rotors. Then, just some easy pickup points welded back onto the axle housing, and it's still a stock stock stock axle, as well as a strong strong strong axle. With LSD's and ratios to choose from for the price of peanuts...

a picture of a toyota axle that's ready to be drilled. The original holes were welded shut, then a deeper center spigot welded on, then the face smoothed, and the spigot turned to size. On the back side, that can't be seen, the area where the stud shoulders go was turned flat also. You can see on the edges where the scallops are, where the original bolt circle used to be:

We're moving one of the newspapers into new offices, I get to assemble/disassemble cubicles (how is it that the IT guy somehow magically becomes the building services guy too?), and tomorrow I've got to tone out all of the phone/network drops, install a switch and patch cables, and install a phone system. This toyota axle is probably going to be a few months down the road, nothing immediate.

SgtRauksauff

I just looked that up because I was curiou.s

It seems that drill diameters have a plus zero tolerance (they are not bigger) and up to a minus .0005 tolerance.

so the .013 drill could make between a .0125 and .0130 hole, but will not make a .0135 hole as needed.

ah, cool! I was kind of thinking maybe for a pilot-bushing remover. I've heard tell of people just packing that area with grease, then putting a rod the same diameter of the input shaft through, then tapping it in -- the grease gets displaced and pushes the bushing out. Kinda handy if you don't have a good way to pull the bushing.

so, where do these pieces go into the hub assembly? take pictures of the install!

Thats a good way to get broken roll pins out of blind holes too. If grease is to fluid candle wax also works great!
