View Full Version : smoke
heres the thing...my car smokes like no ones business. it wont stop. i put on my stock turbo and everything, but for some reason it started to fume like hell. i dont understand, i took off the green and injectors because of the mileage thinking i was doing something good, now im driving around dragging a cloud of shit behind me. besides that i have a sweet exhaust leak becuase my downpipe is too small for the evoIII o2 housing. does anyone have a downpipe that will fit or any advice why my car is doing this?

What color smoke is it? White.... Black..... Blue-ish....
What does the smoke smell like? Coolant.... Fuel..... Oil.....
Have you done a compression check?
Have you checked your oil for coolant and coolant for oil?
More info needed.
the smoke is whitish
glavich decided that it was steam... im leaning towards a bad 14b or tons of oil in my intercooler system because it is severe when the turbo spools
If this is the second turbo doing this it is not the turbo. I would be willing to bet you have a bad head gasket, cracked head, or someone didn't retorque the ARP head bolts after a hundred miles and the head is starting lift off the block under boost.

whiteish is coolant, I will have to agree with VPT. when you rebuilt the engine, did you have the head re-surfaced, if not, what kind of head gasket did you use?
i have a metal head gasket in right now

Take 10 minutes out of your busy day and do a compression check. I have a tester if you would like to borrow it.
You may want to check the coolant level as well. If you are burning coolant then you are losing coolant.
I highly doubt its the FMIC but If you think it is, pull it off and hose it out with some dawn dish soap.

also, check you UICP for any oil buildup, and your coolant levels(as said).

If you did not resurface the head, than thats your problem. those metal head gaskets do not give enough tollerance and any warrpage on the head will cause a problem

I would be shocked if he didn't deck the head.
Why did you go with a metal headgasket? The stocker is actually very good and is often used as an "accident sponge" to save other more expensive parts from taking a digger.
Who rebuilt the motor?

That's not great news. Great news would be more like this: Hey guys I finally saw the light and bought myself a Honda.

Well at least it's not steam!!!! Ha ha thats funny.
Anyway.... Oil could still mean low compression...... Did you do a compression check?

I was gonna say I was pretty sure that it was. Driving behind smut yesterday I could definitely smell burning oil.......Also by the 3 huge drops of oil on my windshield from tailing the car.
great, oil rings to be replaced maybe, new turbo time, brownish antifreeze, this is great. fuck dsm's. im thinking they had [D]ick [S]ucking [M]achine on their minds when they named these cars.

Brownish antifreeze ..... very bad.
Who built the motor? I'd go back and politely ask for a health check.
glavich built it, i messed it up.
how much do you want for it?

well, he built it, tell him u want reciepts for getting the head decked, as thats what any book would tell you to do when rebuilding an engine, or when simply changing a head gasket.

A head shouldn't be milled unless out of factory specs. my b16 head has been on and off motors about 6 times now and has never been milled.

well if u go according to factory spec, than thats with using a factory headgasket. With those MLS head gaskets, there is not enough give. If you read in on those MLS head gaskets, it is strongly recommended to have them resurfaced to ensure proper seal.

At this point he still doesn't know if its the head gasket. Even a leaky HG shouldn't produce oil shooting exhaust. Then again if the motor is simply leaking oil while it sits in the driveway maybe Megan was simply getting spray from a drip. That seems more reasonable.
None the less, both a dry and wet compression check is in order.
Not to add fuel to the fire but once oil gets in the coolant or vice versa its a really bitch to clean out the ENTIRE system.
Keep in mind coolant in the oil is very bad for bearings and such so I definately wouldn't be driving the car.
I don't know all the details about your rebuild and I'm not sure why you say you messed the motor up yourself so I won't blame anyone. All I'm going to say is I agree with Dizzm on this decking of the head. Also a fresh rebuild shouldn't be leaking oil while parked.
Matt should jump in this thread.
well today tsiII decided to finger my exhaust...pure oil...yum
