My pops needs a newer computer. Just something to access the web and play a few games.

What have you?

Cheap sub $300. I can get a new laptop for $400. No monitor needed.

Do you happen to have a HD with Windows and basic stuff like word and whatnot? My computer is a POS....got a bunch of virus's when my antivirus stuff was out of date, and just turned into a slow pile.

Or just a new-ish computer for cheap?

If you stopped going to the farm animal porn sites you wouldnt have that issue.

you can't just take any HDD with windows on it and expect it to work. The only exception to that is if the HDD was out of the exact same computer you have (same motherboard mainly).

I've had a couple ppl try "cleaning it up" it's been too long since the anti-virus stuff, and it won't even open certain folders and stuff like that. It is toast, unless you completely f-disk and start over....but i dont have the software for that.

what kind of games does he play?

Ubuntu Linux FTW. Free, next to ZERO viruses to deal with, does email, web browsing, etc. with no fuss.

Makes hassling with antivirus updates and such a non-issue. There are still OS updates from time to time, but it's about the same or better than the M$ update scheme.

set it up with a separate /home partition, and you can completely re-install/update/upgrade without losing any saved files.

It's what I use for my parents' computer, and my main media server for now as well.

as far as Word and whatnot, you can get OpenOffice, again for free. Works just fine with microsoft documents. I haven't really tried it with office 2007 and their .docx format though.
