Well I have had several different vehicle's on my mind. However, I need something that's good for all year around. That's when the sti comes in...
I like the 08' sti's but some exterior modifications in the looks need to be done. (I don't like stock ones)
Modifications on looks:
a roof scoop
Prodrive carbon fiber wing
white VolkTE37 wheels
Black paint w/ Monster theme decals
performance:
Crawford Performance 2.5L S3L-H Short Block
Crawford Performance Turbo Kit
Crawford Performance Down Pipe
Brembo 6 Piston Front Brake Kit
Tein Suspension
Basically a tuned down version of this....

They haven't really made a new vehicle that I really can say "I will buy that.".
the Mazdaspeed 3 was close, but they skipped out on the AWD part, and dumbed down the engine.
Although I've got to say, after the HPDE at BHF, and the trip to LSPR last fall, , a day at Grattan, and a day at Gingerman a few years ago, the EVO has been the only car I've driven/ridden that has actually made me seriously think about getting one of them rather than my ~20-year-old mazdas....

What an excellent question. One I thought I had hammered out. I was between a Audi RS4 and a Porsche 911 4S. Then I moved to Seattle where any car you want is within a few miles of ya. In the last 3 weeks I've test drove: 2007 Audi RS4, 2008 Audi RS4, 2009 BMW 335Xi, 2007 BMW M5, 2008 Lotus Elise S(didn't even know they made an S Elise), 2009 Lexus IS-F, 2004 Porsche 911 4S, 2003 Porsche 911 Turbo, and a 2006 Porsche 911 S. I drove past the M3's at the dealers lot to take a look, that was good enough. Tip: Don't look directly at the front end of the car or you will lose your lunch.
All AMAZING cars in their own way... but with either a day of pondering or a day of research I find plenty of faults in all of those vehicles. The RS4 has 3 major issues mechinically from the factory(shocking, eh?), the M5 is neat but traction control constantly is coming up saying "you kidding me? You can't do that!", and you better double check your life insurance before you turn it off. The 911's are awesome cars with a lot going for them, including being quite spacious for their size, but I just don't know if I could own one. Maybe after I start balding, ya read? The Elise has got to be the least practical car ever made, the 335Xi is the most boring car I've ever driven(If you own one, the correct answer to the question "What do you drive?" is "about 15 feet of car"). Which brings me on to an overall summary of these cars.
Why so big? Why so heavy? Car makers need to knock this crap off. "Safer..." or "Todays technology makes them handle just as well" Cut the bologna, they are chubby cars that take up too much space. The 335Xi has 20hp more than my S4 but it was noticeabley slower than my car, weighs 250lbs more, gets worse mileage(according to the sticker). And unless you spend another $4000 on interior upgrades you have an interior design about as exciting as a bucket of yuck. Next year it'll be 300lbs more and 3 inches longer, I'm sure.
So far, my favorite is the 2000 Audi S4 Bi-Turbo(Not that it's without plenty of faults, but I'm not shopping for a bi-turbo S4 so I need not disect) :)
Can you tell I'm sick of car shopping? :)
P.S. I also drove a new style BMW M-Coupe, if you even know what is... they are fun little cars. But very cramped. I can't win.

Did you get on it at all? It moves pretty good... the refinement and sound deadening makes it very underwhelming. Still a disappointment for me... Although at this point it seems like no car is satisfying.
I looked at an AMG at the M-B dealer. The new version of this:
http://www.pbase.com/cdandar/image/102523631/large.jpg
That was at Gingerman, I'm sure you remember.
Meh, can't do it. I asked the sales guy where the manual tranny AMG's are. Automatic only. Just like the Lexus IS-f... What the heck, eh? I didn't even bother sitting in one.
Plus I feel like you can't get much more gaudy than a Mercedes these days. All about flash and pomp. Much like Lexus. Both nice cars. Both designed to be quick but super flashy for the cocky cocks that buy them. Too much Chrome and oversized badging.
When I look at them, my mind see's them like this:
http://streetknowledge.files.wordpress.com/2008/10/mercedes_slr_mclaren_chrome_image002.jpg
Ok, so I'd still drive that SLR even though it's an Automatic and looks like a shiney wang.
If I find I have low selfesteem or a little weiner I'll head back to the Lexus/Mercedes shops.
All my very opinionated opinion, however.

Then I think you are right back to an Audi. You have the same problem the rest of us do.... you are already to high on the food chain.
The IS-F is supposed to be some kick ass car and its slower than my nearly stock EVO. Lexus really shouldn't be making a performance sedan anyway. Its useless. I think that's why I like the M series because its a drivers car. That being said they sure as hell don't hold their value. I've seen a couple sub 15k mile 08 M3's go for $40k when they were nearly $80k last year. I'll probably hang on to my EVO and buy a new SUV.

At this point it looks like I will be hanging on the GTI until it fully paid off. If really hard to sell a car that has as much miles as mine does and is worth less that what is owed on it. My friend just bought an '08 WRX, in the deep deep charcoal metallic color... nice looking car. MUCH more refined than the previous WRXs. almost like a wanna-be luxury car with AWD and 225 turbocharged ponies on tap... feels like more than that though. Very smooth through the gears, braking is nice. handling is crisp for what it is.
interior is a nice upgrade from previous models as well, his is all fabric, no sunroof, but has all the other options including touchscreen Nav, heated wiper plates, upgraded sound, and power everything else of course. reminds me of a Legacy actually. refined, clean, easy to navigate all controls, etc...
overall a nice smooth riding car, decent gas mileage, and still fun to play with! very docile ride compared to my lunker that's for sure.
he picked it up for steal of a price with only 4100miles on the ticker as well!
