View Full Version : "do you even know what e85 is??"

Over the weekend i was proudly bragging about how well hlm's evo preforms on e85. some people were evidently annoyed with my comments and decided to rudely ask me "britt do you even know what e85 is??" well i may be blonde, but i'm not a dumbass.

so...i did some research just for you dizmm...

All the information was found on the National Ethanol Vehicle Coalition website. here are just a few frequetly asked questions that i copied and pasted for your knowings :)

What is E85?
E85 is the term for motor fuel blends of 85 percent ethanol and just 15 percent gasoline. E85 is an alternative fuel as defined by the U.S. Department of Energy. Besides its superior performance characteristics, ethanol burns cleaner than gasoline; it is a completely renewable, domestic, environmentally friendly (http://www.e85fuel.com/information/environment.php) fuel that enhances the nation's economy (http://www.e85fuel.com/e85101/economy.php) and energy independence (http://www.e85fuel.com/e85101/independence.php).

Today, the U. S. imports more than half of its oil, and overall consumption continues to increase. By supporting ethanol production and use, U.S. drivers can help reverse that trend. 85% ethanol can reduce pollution. Government tests have shown that E85 vehicles reduce harmful hydrocarbon and benzene emissions when compared to vehicles running on gasoline. E85 can also reduce carbon dioxide (CO2), a harmful greenhouse gas and a major contributor to global warming.

Although CO2 is released during ethanol production and combustion, it is recaptured as a nutrient to the crops that are used in its production. Unlike fossil fuel combustion, which unlocks carbon that has been stored for millions of years, use of ethanol results in low increases to the carbon cycle.

Ethanol also degrades quickly in water and, therefore, poses much less risk to the environment than an oil or gasoline spill.

What is the range of a flexible fuel vehicle?
Ethanol has less energy content than gasoline. However, E85 also has a much higher octane (ranging from 96 to 105) than gasoline. FFVs are not optimized to E85, so they experience a 10-15% drop in fuel economy. This will vary based on the way one drives, the air pressure in the tires, and additional driving conditions.

E85 is actually E70 in the winter months as to assist in cold starting problems. A listing of when the fuel blend should change is located in the Handbook for Handling, Storing and Dispensing E85 (http://www.e85fuel.com/e85101/faqs/http%7C//www.e85fuel.com/pdf/storing-handling-e85.pdf).

For comparison purposes, aggressive driving habits can result in a 20% loss and low tire pressure can reduce mileage by 6%. Research indicates Ford FFVs experience a 5% horsepower gain on E85. The range of any particular vehicle is dependent on the size of the fuel tank and driving habits. Current Ford Taurus FFVs have an 18-gallon fuel tank and will normally travel 350 miles between refuelings.

E85. Clean. Renewable. 105 Octane. Made in the USA.

Brit, I think you are oblivious to a lot of things. You make your decisions based on the judgments of other’s. Do you think that the benefit of E85 is because it is cleaner and better for the environment? If so, then you need to think again...

"Official U.S. government federal records show a single Archer-Daniels-Midland Company corn processing plant in Clinton, Iowa produced nearly 20,000 tons of pollutants including sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and volatile organic compounds in 2004. The EPA considers an ethanol plant as a “major source” of pollution if it produces more than 100 tons of any one pollutant per year."

E85 vs gasoline per gallon has less pollutants when burned, but due to its lower BTU rating you need to burn more, which in turn means more fuel consumed to match the same BTU rating as gasoline, which leads to E85 actually producing MORE pollutants at the same achieved BTU rating.

Corn Blows! Save it for whiskey and the cows.

VPT

Corn works well for heating homes. But the e85 is a waste of farm land, tractor fuel to harvest, all that crap that dizzmzmm said and its a waste of a pump that could be better used for turbo blue.

Dizmm
05-19-2009, 10:51 AM
I actually made my own little HHO kit about 5 months ago. Didn’t install it on a car, but its pretty simple how it works. Basically it just electrolyzes the water and splits the Hydrogen and Oxygen which gets pumped into your intake on the car.

http://hho-gas.org

mrslysly
05-19-2009, 10:58 AM
Thats the simplified version. Finding the right catalyst so you get enough of a reaction is tricking. Trying to electrolyze pure H2O takes extreme amounts of power to generate enough H2 and O2. We built one at work to put on my boss' yukon. Def was a learning experience.

Then you have electrode and anode metals and placement (really critical so you don't have the split H2 and O recombining while still in the mix). Seperator tanks so you don't have boiled over liquid right into the intake. Tricking new PCMs to not dump extra fuel in because the O2 sensors flip out.

highline_motorsports
05-19-2009, 11:00 AM
For inviromental reason's yeah it may suck but for the import scene which we are all in it ROCKS!!

Cost way less than 93 oct.
so instead of paying $5+ per gallon for turbo blue, pay under $2 per gallon for e-85.

Its here why not take advantage of it..

Then you have electrode and anode metals and placement (really critical so you don't have the split H2 and O recombining while still in the mix). Seperator tanks so you don't have boiled over liquid right into the intake. Tricking new PCMs to not dump extra fuel in because the O2 sensors flip out.

yup, you would need some method of tuning (ECUflash or the like) to take away half the fuel. It could be done, but doubtful it would really take off as who would be able to make all this profit that they are currently making on public transportation.

I don't think there is an issue with seals. The negatives are its a bitch to start in the winter. Its hard to tell when you've gone too far on timing (you normally figure it out when the bearings die), the blend changes from station to station and season to season, there is a possible bore wash concern (requires more frequent oil changes), and its alot thirstier.

In addition you should have a wideband, fuel pump, and bigger injectors.

The wideband will be next most likely..

And i have heard rumors about the seals but yet to find a person that actually had something happen to thier seals..

Yes it is a bitch to start in the cold.

Bore wash just like the seals heard stuff but yet to see anything back it up.. I am due for a oil change right now so i will let u know what it looks like in 2k miles and at the time of the oil change. Unless it is really bad at 2k miles, then i will just change it then.

you should talk to any small engine machine shop or atv repair place.. ethynol in the gas is a killer on them motors.. atvs and snowmobiles come in all the time with problems do to ethynol, even the manufacturers will tell you not to run ethynol because of the problems.. not with only wearing on the seals but the ethyl in the gas converting back to water after a short peroid of time because people dont use them as much as they should to burn the gas out and replace

Bore wash is misleading a bit. Yes it can dry out the rings and cause scoring but the bigger problem if your dumping that much fuel is thinning out the oil and washing out the crank bearings under load.

But so long as you change your oil in short intervals that should never be a problem.

I however don't think all the work to run e85 is worth the reward. I would rather just tune the car to pump gas and call it a day. No need to look for special gas, worry about frequent oil changes, worry about bore/bearing washout, worry about seals or O-rings, etc.

Just pull up to any gas station and dump the high test stuff in and go. Better gas mileage and no worries.

devlish
05-20-2009, 09:36 AM
^ 100% agreed. i like a setup that can remain the same once it's tuned. no cold start issues. if you wanna push it hard at the track, splash some race gas in it, and tune it at the track, then go back to your street tune and fill up at any station. and not worry about all the little stuff. but hey, that's just me.

http://www.alcoholinjectionsystems.com/images/customers/1967_nova_6.jpg

http://www.alcoholinjectionsystems.com/images/stage2_methanol_large.jpg

$570 for this kit, its the AIS Stage 2 Digital Progressive Trunk Mount kit.

Edit, I'm starting a new thread on water/alky/meth injection as some good conversations have been brought up lately.

^Personally if I were looking into a W/I kit I think I would highly look in to the Aquamist set ups. I've been following their products for years Richard L. is there engineer/tech and is by far the most knowledgeable person I've ever came across for auto based W/I info and research. The results there were getting could not be duplicated by ANY other W/I system on the market in reguards to the SRT community.

Dizmm

i'd only buy from AIS like the pics above. Their pumps will take 100% meth, the trunk tank design is perfect for when the fluid levels become low, and their progressive controllers are completely digital and tunable.

As for dyno numbers when comparing kits, that’s more based on the tuner than the meth/alky kit itself.

The aqua mist has all that and more actually. As for dyno numbers.. not what I'm basing my info on. Degrees of timing, knock, ability to in real world hold HOM on 93 pump and Alkly mix are what I base my info on. Dyno numbers are only secondary back up.

Certified welder is a very very loosely used term. To be "certified" can mean you ore only certified to weld one position with one welder. IE Welding a mild steel flat but joint on a table with a wire feed welder.

Or it could mean you are certified for over 100 different positions, metals, and welders. Could even mean you are a certified aquatic welder that welds under water in a scuba suit. Those guys can roll in 7 digit payrolls every year.
