I got this card in the mail from Vehicle Services. They are offering me an extended warranty on my 2002 JEEP Grand Cherokee Limited.

Here is the deal.....

5 years or another 100k miles (from current mileage) whatever comes first
$100 deductible
Free Towing / Free Rental
$433/year = $2165 total

I actually don't think that is a bad deal. I've been pampering the truck because its out of warranty but if it was covered for another 100k miles I'd beat the shit out of it non-stop. If the tranny, transfer case, front/rear diff, dual climate, moon roof, or engine decided to take a shit in the next 100k miles I could get it fixed for only a $100.

Do you think the added security is worth the $2k?

is that an extended warranty through the factory, or one of those 3rd party warranties?

i'd be weary of that. Jason Kindler runs that used car dealership down the road, and he used to sell a 3rd party deal like that, until he needed to use it for a customer, and then they brought out the fine print, etc... it was a prorated warranty, and all sorts of BS came along with it. i'd make sure you get EVERYTHING in writing, and not just the highlights.

just something to think about.

I've heard stories just like that.

$2,000 just so you can hear: Oh that isn't covered, read the fine print in your contract. Doesn't sound like a very good deal to me.

The interesting this is the jeep forum swears by them. There are almost no bad reviews.

What about being the 2nd or 3rd owner though?

It doesn't matter what owner you are..... A few guys have the same coverage and they've used it to fix the dual climate that WILL eventually take a crap. That unit alone costs $1200. Then theres that fancy quadra-drive that I have. It works great but when it takes a digger its expesnive. I'm gonna call again today to get "the fine print".

Jeeps are great, you shouldn't need a warrenty.

I think Evil is struggling to understand the Jeep (warranty) thing.

I sure as hell don't understand the Jeep thing.

Well I went at it via a different approach. I called up a few Jeep dealers and asked about aftermarket warranties. They said the only decent one is the one from the dealer and even those aren't all that great. If you have a dealer extended warranty the shop will fight for approval to get parts replaced because the service area (especially with dealer parts) is a cash cow for them. Other aftermarket warranties will probably not be honored at a dealer. In fact even if they are honored the warranty often only covers labor up to $50/hr and dealer labor is higher.

I called a few other places around the area (realizing there are not decent service shops in town) and asked about their expierience with aftermarket warranties. Most say powertrain is covered but little things like heated seats and such aren't unless they are specifically listed in the warranty. In most cases shops make the customer pay up front and then its the customers job to get the refund from the warranty company via a claim process. Odds are that could be painful.

DC does have a factory extended warranty but its $600/year and only covers 12k miles per year. Not a very good deal in my opinion.

In the end I dont think its worth it.

Based on my experiences in the past aftermarket warranties are crap. Just like 98% of aftermarket stuff.....Crap.
