......and that is why people should by them instead of these newer DSMs some people call EVOs.

Yeah,
Thats what ya get for taking smack.
Last fall at one of our events noticed overflow tank was overfull.
Would only fail when driven real hard.
Took it apart last month after driving all winter and most of the summer.
Never burned coolant, no oil in cooling ststem, no coolant in oil.
Strange deal.
It was just leaking under heavy load.
Installed ARP studs, hopefully that will keep it from happining again.
(clutch was starting to get worn, figured better look into it when I pulled the motor)http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo175/MR_FUJI01/2004STIEJ25010.jpg

Did you drop the motor out the bottom or lift it out the top?
Mr. Fuji
10-27-2008, 02:20 PM
Just pulled it out the top.
The axles, trans, and steering all stayed in the car, untouched.
I could have pushed it outside If I needed to.
The hood opens up 90 degrees so I also left it on. Just tied a string to the
rear wing to hold it open, that way I could take off the prop rod.
Removed Intercooler, 2 bolts, 2 hose clamps.
Removed Heater hoses.
Remove MAS airflow\Airfilter assy
Remove Battery, sat the AC compressor in its place on the inner fender Right side.
I left the AC system charged, no need to remove lines.
Power Steering pump sat where the air box was on passenger side.
Remove Alternator
Remove Radiator and Elect Fans as an assembly, un plug a connector.
Pull Down pipe (Exhaust) off Turbo
Unplug 2 Big Harness connectors for Injection and Sensers on left and Right side of Motor.
Remove an access plug from the side of the bellhousing to release the throw-out brg.
Pull the motor out the top with intake, Exhaust (up pipe, front side to side pipe), Turbo, and Engine harness all still on.
Bolt her on a stand.
Piece a cake.http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo175/MR_FUJI01/2004STIEJ25004.jpg

Nice work .... sounds like a clean rip. I've been hearing the Mitsu folks are starting to prefer a bottom drop but they leave the tranny attached for that.
Did you upgrade the clutch or get another stock one?
BTW its odd to see the tranny sitting in there like that. Almost like the front axles would need to be really long to reach the tranny. That is a pretty tight little motor.

Nice work!
Mr. Fuji

Yea,
Axles are long.
But, in that pic, I got a floor jack under the transaxle to get above the studs under the motor mounts when I pulled it.
I stayed with a Stock clutch.
As a matter of fact, it wasnt that bad. The disc was warped (got real hot) and was only contacting on the outside radious of the disc.
Wierd
Flywheel still had factory hatch marks in it, so I let it fly.
I must a got it hot when I was slipping it while drag racing a snowmobile last winter.

How did you get a snowmobile to race you? Usually those guys are so scared of cars they won't even consider it.
Did you win?

Youd better slap a lightweight pulley on there!!!
Mr. Fuji

Intake cams have variable timing
the controlers have the oil lines on them, you can see the selinoid on the flange holding the cams in. Exhaust is the bottom cam, intake on top. http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo175/MR_FUJI01/2004STIEJ25012.jpg

Bottom of the Cam Flange thing. You can see the Cam Timing solinoid by my hand.

Hwy Z runs along a snowmobile trail.
"Big Dave" ran me on a MXZ600
I won at the cost of a clutch.
Wet pavement
It was close
A "Litttle Dave" may have beat me.

No. Lightweight pulley = bad. Stock is best.

what flywheel did you put in your evo when your clutch went out TK????
TomKat
10-27-2008, 04:47 PM
Ahh good question. The flywheel is not a harmonic part of the balancing of the engine.
The crank pulley usually is.

I'm doing the HG on a 2.2L legacy this weekend. It's not quite an STi, but maybe I'll post up some pics if I remember to take some.

i am doing a head gasket at the shop right now on a 2.5 legacy and just got the heads off yesterdays and got them tested and now just need to get them back on and drop it back in the car..
I LOVE WORKING ON SUBIS!! They are actually really simple.. I love the whole machanical aspect of it, they really did their home work when building them. besides the foot long head bolts that make the head gaskets go all the time.
I have another 2.5 engine that will also be getting new head gaskets and be gettind sold as a complete engine or i am going to gind a checp subi with a blow engine for it..

Are they DOHC 2.5's or SOHC 2.5's? Either way they're easy to work on.
