View Full Version : Where to go for a new bike....

I'll probably put a hold on driving so much this summer, and I am now in search of where to go for a nice bike for riding from one side of town to the other. None of that off-roading business or 500-gear bikes, I just need something for crusing that's comfortable.... Would a Wal-Mart special do fine or should I end up going somewhere like Campus Cycle or Hostel Shop?

I would check them all out and go with whatever suits you best (price, comfort, reliability). If you'll be doing a lot of riding around town, my advice is to get something with a comfortable seat.

As for where to go...I personally would recommend Campus Cycle. My pa just took my bike there to get the gears fixed and to get some new wheels for it and it only cost $100. They have always given us excellent service in the past, although I will admit I got my bike from Bring's in Rapids. Of course that was back in the dark ages!

If you only want to use it for a summer and dispose of it a Walmart special might suit you. I would suggest going to a real bike shop and picking up one of their lower end bikes which will probably still be twice as nice as a Walmart bike. i'm partial to Hostel Shoppe, but that is because I used to work there back in the day and they still hook me up with great discounts. Hostel, Campus or Brings would be a good choice, I know each of them have loyal customers that swear by them, don't think you would go wrong with any of them.

I'm sure once I buy a bike I'll keep it for a long time and ride it a lot, so a "lower-end" good bike is probably what I'll end up with. I'll check out some prices and whatnot and see what happens.

Is there any basic stuff I should know about bikes, or just get an expensive one with wheels and a comfortable seat?

I would not get a Wal Mart bike

If you want to save some money look at used bikes. Used bikes are worthless so you can find some great deals on nice bikes.

If you go to Brings ask them about new, but not current model year bikes. They usually have quite a few of those in the warehouse at discounted prices.

Ahh, also a great idea... Any brand of bike you guys (and girls) swear by, or basically anything better than a 1994 Huffy? lol

I've got a Schwinn and I love it. My parents both own Treks and they swear by those, but they used to be Schwinn aficionados too.

Based on the way some of you write, I'd have to question your statement VPT. See, for example, Helby's posts. You can't read half of them! (J/K Helby).

What I teach is not only how to write and speak proper, logical, intelligent english but also how to think critically, assimilate information, look beyond the words on the page to find the deeper meaning (read critically), apply what literature can teach us about the past to our current lives/situations, write coherently and present difficult-to-understand information in a logical format, appreciate cultural nuances, and express one's emotions, ideas, theories, opinions, and factual discoveries in an intelligent manner so others can learn from what you've said. Among other things...

A couple of years ago I got a Giant bike from Brings for $200, it's pretty nice for a not-so-serious biker like myself.

Are you going to be using Loewen's book for English 102? I had Zeke Jarvis for that class, the book was interesting, but the class itself kind of sucked. We wrote 4 papers and nothing else. Talked about the book in class, and outside of class we wrote papers that had nothing to do with the book (for the most part).

I'm not sure which book I'll be using yet. I've got a couple of options but I haven't looked them over yet.

I worked all day guy.

My response to all that is, why? Why make something so simple so complicated?

I guess I would rather see and learn about space, the earth, science, astronomical things, how things work, etc. rather than learning to speak more intellectually.
