View Full Version : The Talon is Almost Ready

Finally pulled the talon in the garage a couple nights ago. This whole deal was great fun. Started off by putting a new alternator relocation kit it and a new timing belt on it. Then put the et drags back on it, had to keep swaping tires around because the wheel weights hit the breaks. Time to start the car up. Turn the key and this horrible screaching sound comes from by the starter and the motor was not tuning over. Think the starter is bad and pull it out and nothing is wrong, check the ring gear on the flywheel and it is ok but it spins free, WTF!!!

Last year I drove the car into the garage on the house and then it was pushed to the shop and there it sat. VPT and I took a couple hours to get the broken bolts out of the crank. VPT says wear glasses while I am grinding and I do. On the last bolt that I was going to grind I did not put my glasses on. I turn the grinder on and go fucking figure, the grinding wheel explodes right in my damn eye. We got all the bolts out and VPT chased the threads in the crank and filed the crank flat. We then cleaned up and filed the flywheel and put it all back together.

Thank you VPT for all the help, appriciate it. I owe you one!!!!!!!!!!

The new axels are in also. She was started up for the first time this year last night. She should be ready for the track soon!!!

$20,000 for a car that is already built and having major issues already,, man that has to suck.

Don't want to follow a pile of crap truck that may start shooting parts of pistons out at me. Car is not street legal anyways. With you tuning your truck, most 15 second cars have a good chance of beating you anyways.

When Mistu assemble the motor, I am sure they never thought those 6 bolts would have to hold nearly 1000hp.

So the guy who built the motor failed to upgrade the bolts.

No, what i mean by that is when the mitsu engineers designed the motor, they used the particular size of bolt and only 6 of them as that was all that would be needed for a 210HP engine. They did not engineer the motor to withstand 1000hp (approx). If they did, I bet there would be more than just 6 bolts. Think how much stress is put on those bolts.

I know what you mean. I agree, but my point was:

When the engine builder is building a 1000 hp engine, you'd figure he'd upgrade the bolts (since he's upgrading the crank and flywheel).

Furthermore,
I'm sure that the manufacturers of the crank have tested the bolts and determined 6 to be strong enough to withstand x amount of power (I'm sure they rated the bolt setup to a certain amount of power, probably beyond 1000).

Maybe it was a faulty bolt. *shrug*

No problem extreme! It was fun for me!

As for the bolts, what I saw was the bolts broke like they were twisted till they broke. They were not all flush with the crank like the crank spun and sheared them off. It looked to me like some one over torqued more than a few of them, stretched them and made them weak. Over time of hard launchs and gear jambing they broke and the remaining good bolts couldn't do the job anymore.

I know mine uses 8 bolts on the crank. Grade 12.8 or something along those lines.

I will not go to WIR with the car. Not for your reasons but because of the huge bump at the end of the track. That bump is pretty scary when you hit it going well over 100mph.

We've gone over this a million times. Buy a solid car, lightly mod it, and enjoy it.

Not only is car bowling boring as shit.... its silly to buy a 9 second car when you can't even race it at your local track.

Sell your fleet of DSMs and enjoy your RS.

After some thought, I have to agree with Dizmm. I know my opinion doesn't matter much when it comes to Extreme's cars, but the black talon is an extremely sexy looking car (almost as sexy as my car  ) You should sell the red talon. You haven't even technically brought it out and already something is wrong, that's not a good sign. Your black talon could be a daily driver and how much use will you actually get out of the red one? Just my opinion . . .

I was in Miami last year for my brother's wedding. We stopped at the Lambo dealership there. It was crazy, but they did have an 04 Ferrari 360 Modena for sale, it was $180K. They had info on it, it was $20K down and $1800 a month. lol

One of these times when I go down there I WILL be renting a Lambo. I go down pretty much every summer, its $20K security deposit on a credit card which isnt a problem, but they are $3000 a day to rent. Someday...

I actually looked into renting one also. $3k is quite a bit of money for one day of fun.

It would be nice to have one. But, when your car almost costs as much as your house, ouch!!!

As for the talon. It is farting and poping again and I can not figure out why. I will be working on it all day tomorrow. I have a couple things that I think could cause it. We shall see........

Shit is not going very good lately. Truck is still broken. 2 rebuilt injectors failed a buzz test and now I have a brand new one on the way. Not fun putting an injector in a diesel.

From the DSMLink part out and your attendance at the autox/lapping days it appears you have said to hell with drag racing. Good choice.

I'm sure you'll still use your EVO for the occational fun run out at the spot. I find that more fun than trailering your car, waiting in line, and getting 10 seconds of track time for every hour you are at the track.

For me, the hardest part of owning a road-race/daily driver is preventing myself from adding more power. These days its too stupid-easy to build a 10 second EVO. Some days I think I should do it and other days I think its retarded.

You are right. I am done with drag racing. I will drag race but it will not be something like the talons ever again. I got bent over pretty good on that talon. Gotta love how people like to screw you over.

There is no turning back now. I sold $7.5k parts off the talon already. I am so sick of it.

Maybe maybe not. It should be a few years before I need to replace any of those things anyway. Depending on how many launches I make I may not even need a clutch for a few years.

I would like to build a stroker for an educational project but I'm in no hurry to start that. Besides I need a few more people to wreck so I can get a donor motor and possibly tranny cheap.

In the mean time I'll continue to watch my money market account grow!
