My buddy just bought a 97 gst and its kind of a pile. He dosent know jack about cars and i know a thing or 2 so i told him i would look at it, but i dont know much about turboed cars.
Heres the deal when you drive the car and come to a stop the rpms drop down to about 100 rpms and it some times dies and sometimes catches itself and then the rpms surge from 1200 rpms to about 500.
I put it on the scan tool and it came up with a i think it was a p1104 code and it says it was a waste gate solenoid malfunction. The picture on the computer showed the solenid was pretty much under the collent overflow tank, maybe im an idoit but i couldnt find it, all i found was a wire harness connection hanging arond that area not going anywheres.
It looks like the previous owners really half assed this car so any help would really help me and my buddy out. thanks

The wastegate solenoid is commonly removed from the vehicle. That isn't the source of the idle problem. I would check the IAC and see if the coolant lines are hooked up to the TB.

did that fix the problem??
that would have been near the top of my list... but what else it kinda sounds like is that the BOV is venting to the atmosphere... stalling is a common problem when coming to a stop sign etc, where the RPMs go real low. there could be a leak in the return line or something. if the IAC didn't solve it, this is an easy one to check.

i havent checked the IAC yet but i had it in the shop the other day and i was messing with the blow off valve and it looked like it was kind of stickin open so i took it apart and cleaned it becuase there was some gunk in the but that didnt seem to do it.
is there a way to test a blow off valve to see if its malfunctioning or is that something that really dosnt happen to blow off valves.

BOV is probably vented, common newbie thing is for people to vent the BOV because it sounds cooler, but down cause the engine to die after you let off the throttle.

thanks dizmm, that could be the problem bc one scane tool said "manufactured controled air fuel metering". what do i look for if the bov is vented, is there a way to fix it or dose he have to replace it

you just have to hook the recirculation hose back up. I would suggest reading through the faq's.
Here, this may help to:

While you're fuckin around under the hood, teach yourself and your friend how to do boost leak tests, they'll be one of your good friends as long as he owns that car.

Every time he has a problem like this just whisper hondas.
